The Promwear Giveaway is about 16 years old.
Cas Hartter used the giveaway as a resource when in high school, becoming the owner of the Cupcake Dress the year it was the subject of the Daily Sentinel article. (See News Coverage, below)
The Giveaway went on hiatus during the pandemic, during which time donations continued, the inventory swelled, and Cheryl Whitehurst searched for a new organizer.
Cas, now a graduate, volunteered.
In October 2021, Cas and their mom Ann took all of the inventory. In spring 2022, Bronwyn joined the team, and in 2023 took a leadership role.
The collection in 2021 was over 3,000 garments, much of which was outdated, damaged, and dirty. Volunteers spent a over 80 hours hanging and inspecting each and every garment to pull out clothes that were not ready-to-wear.
Items that are not ready-to-wear are sent to be updated, altered, or reimagined, or given to art programs for students to work with. Anything that is good business attire goes to Homeward Bound.
Cas volunteered with the Mesa County Library's G.O.A.T for 7 years, serving as secretary for 4 of those, until their graduation. They spent several years in 4-H doing sewing and similar clothing-related projects, and has a history of working with similar volunteer organizations. Cas participated in the Young Entrepreneur's Academy (YEA!) through the Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce and started a game bag sewing business. They are currently on the boards of Geek Parties of the Grand Valley and the Mesa County Historical Society.
Ann is active in volunteering, the art community, and mutual aid activities in the Grand Valley. She is on the board of Geek Parties of the Grand Valley, History Alive! Colorado West Chautauqua, Mesa County Lost and Found Pets, and the Mesa County Historical Society. She worked with Mutual Aid partners at the beginning of the pandemic to connect people to people and get needs met. She started the Grand Valley Homeschool Curriculum Library, a free resource for the public to get homeschooling materials and textbooks, and worked it for 10 years before leaving it with other volunteers.
Having started, organized, and worked for many for-profit and not-for-profit entities, as well as working to open a school of her own, Ann is a volunteer mentor at the Chamber of Commerce's YEA! program, helping young entrepreneurs get their business or non-profit paperwork up and running. Taking over and setting up the Grand Junction Free Promwear program is a logical extension of her work with students and the community.
Bronwyn stated volunteering for the first time ever in 2022. It just so happened that it was with Grand Junction Free Promwear (even though she never went to her own prom). Through Promwear she found other volunteering opportunities ending up as the Board Historian for Geek Parties of the Grand Valley. She is now a full time volunteer for Promwear helping run the drives, and giveaways.
