I've hit a bit of a snag and could really use some help. I've got a bunch of photos in HEIC format, and I'm struggling to view heic files on Windows 10 (and potentially Windows 11) setup. It seems like my current setup just isn't cutting it for these types of files. I'm wondering if anyone has recommendations for a best HEIC viewer that's compatible with Windows 10 or 11? I'm looking for something straightforward and user-friendly since I'm not exactly a tech wizard. Any advice or suggestions would be super appreciated. Thanks in advance!

About two years ago I bought a new computer and it was installed with the new Photos app. It is absolute garbage but I thought it maybe has something to do with my computer. After many discussions with my peers, trying out other people's computers and buying a new laptop I am convinced it is a problem on Microsoft's side. How did anyone think releasing this incompetent app was a good idea? Especially as the old photo viewer app had no problems. The new one is a buggy slow mess. Am I crazy or does nobody else have this problem too? So many decisions by this company confuse me to no end.

My Outlook was updated to the newest version a few days ago and I'm having issues with opening PDF attachments in my default PDF viewer. Before, you could click the attachment in the email and get a preview but if you were to fully open the attachment it would open in my default application. Since the update, when i click on the attachment it pulls up the preview but the only way to actually open it is to save it to OneDrive, download to my computer, or print. In most cases I need to open the full attachment but not necessarily need to save it. Just review in detail and the preview is not working well enough for me. I'm not even able to rotate using the right-click and rotate. How can I change this to open in my default viewer and not in the message preview only?

Once you have adjusted these settings, try opening a PDF attachment in Outlook again. It should now open in your default PDF viewer instead of just displaying the preview. You should be able to review the attachment in detail, rotate pages, and perform other functions available in your PDF viewer.

The steps I followed:

Open Outlook and go to the "File" tab at the top left corner of the window.

In the File menu, click on "Options."

In the Outlook Options window, select the "Trust Center" tab.

Click on the "Trust Center Settings..." button.

In the Trust Center window, select the "Attachment Handling" option on the left side.

Under the "Attachment and Document Previewers" section, locate the entry for PDF files (extension .pdf) and make sure it is set to "Adobe Acrobat Document" or your preferred PDF viewer.

If the correct program is already selected, you can try toggling the setting off and back on by unchecking and rechecking the checkbox.

Click "OK" to save the changes and close the Trust Center window.

Click "OK" again to close the Outlook Options window.

Then:

Clear Outlook temporary files: Clearing temporary files associated with Outlook might help resolve any cached data causing the issue.

Close Outlook.

Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.

Type %localappdata%\Microsoft\Outlook and press Enter.

Delete all the files and folders within the Outlook folder.

Restart Outlook and check if the issue persists.

I just had another user with this issue today. They logged on to their computer, my GPO did its job set the default pdf viewer to Adobe Reader, the user opened/closed several pdf files no problem. A short time later goes to open a pdf file and it opens in CHROME!!!

This issue just came up for me today out of the blue. Everything was fine before with Adobe being the default PDF viewer, and then suddenly all my PDF files have the Chrome icon beside it. In my Outlook, all PDF attachments that people sent me also show the Chrome icon.

We are aware of this, and it is our current best option for resolving the issue. However, it has not been a 100% solution. We have had several dozen repeat issues after doing this method, So we are still looking for the silver bullet on this one. What I'm really trying to understand though is how Chrome is able to insert itself as the default pdf viewer in the first place. Supposedly Microcrap has put measures in place to only allow the user to select the default apps, and us as admins can set them only ONCE at initial login, and if it is done any other way Microcrap will revert it to their crappy browser as the default pdf viewer. However in this case they are not able to do it for some reason, Chrome inserts itself and Microcrap leaves it alone, Why?????? How?????? Oh, yeah, it is a Microcrap solution!!!

Edit: Only reason I found out it was the same Id was because of this page: -docs/acrobatetk/tools/AdminGuide/pdfviewer.html However, keep in mind it is lying to you, that ProgId for Reader has 100% changed.

I agree totally, it is way to difficult for most clients.

@mcNeel: I think it is good for your business to have some kind of viewer, this is a great way for customers to start working with Rhino on a low level base.

Simlab has a free viewer for ios & android which uses their own .ZIM format. While you need to have the Simlab software to create the ZIM file, this has some advantage over using OBJ. Because ZIM is binary, the files are much smaller.

I have installed Splunk on a Linux box and is listening for incoming on 9997. Our linux boxes send its syslog to it and work fine.

The Windows boxes however do not send any event viewer logs. I installed SplunkForwarder on it and followed the prompts where I entered the Receiver server and port 9997. Also restarted the splunk service just in case.

What additional configurations are to be done to ensure Event Viewer logs/AD monitoring start to populate my Splunk sitting on the Linux box.

I'm able to telnet to 9997 from Windows to Linux so it is not an access issue.

Hey, I am wondoring How Can I send Log files from linux to windows? I downloaded splunk in windows and forwarder in linux. I can telnet 9997 from linux to windows but I don't know how to send a files. can anybody help me with it?

OK - i know I'm maybe demanding so it is not even neccesary to opening files by viewer but i want to see thumbnails to have ensurance the folder with Affinity files is not empty when I'm browsing files with image viewer.

It's easy to get the trusty old Windows Photo Viewer back -- simply open up Settings and go to System > Default apps. Under "Photo viewer" you should see your current default photo viewer (probably the new Photos app). Click this to see a list of options for a new default photo viewer. Assuming you upgraded to Windows 10 from a previous version of Windows, you should see Windows Photo Viewer as an option.

2. Double-click on your new REG file to merge it with your Windows Registry. You will need to click through the User Account Control and a few other windows to allow the file to make changes to the Registry.

The default PDF viewer on your computer is a great option for quickly glancing at a PDF. However, while viewing a PDF you may notice changes that need to be made within it. Most default PDF viewers do not have the necessary tools to make edits or collaborate with coworkers. You may want to change your default PDF viewer to Adobe Acrobat in order to have the editing and collaboration tools you need all in one place.
