Older Nook e-readers will not be able to buy ebooks anymore

15 November 2023 (Good E-Reader)

Barnes and Noble have announced that they are suspending the service of older Nook e-readers. Barnes and Noble want people to upgrade to newer Nook e-readers.

If you have a Kindle Fire, you now have the option to download library ebooks and audiobooks using the free Overdrive Media Console app. If you choose to continue downloading Kindle format books on your Kindle Fire, follow the directions on the Downloading Library Ebooks on your Amazon Kindle:

So I'm using calibre to load ebooks onto my Kindle Paperwhite and everything seems to be working just fine except when I try to use any of the Goodreads options on that book ("View on Goodreads" or "Add to Goodreads shelf") I get the error "There was a problem connecting to Goodreads." My Goodreads profile is hooked up and works for some other books just fine. I'm assuming there's something up with the way calibre is adding the metadata for that book but even after messing around with the ISBN data I still can't figure out what's wrong.

4. Removing a book from your device is easy (but also kind of pointless since they hold so many books), but the sent-to-kindle books will still be stored on your Kindle cloud. You can then delete them from the cloud by going to the relevant website.

For another, the iPad app has recently introduced a scrolling feature where e-books no longer page turn, but now scroll along the way Logos books do. This may not seem like much, but it's actually a very big step forward. Kindle was stuck trying to make digital book simply imitate print books, but this is the wrong way to think about ebooks. Digital books are a different medium with a different set of advantages (and possibly drawbacks) and when you just try and make a digital book mimic a physical book you are actually hamstringing what some of the advantages are to ebooks, while you don't actually gain the advantage of a physical book by mimicking it on a digital format. I won't bother going into more detail here, but suffice it to say that I think the scrolling feature is a superior and more natural digital experience over the page-turn feature that any Kindle e-reader is going to be stuck in.

Searchable full text copies of over 8,000 online books. The basic collection primarily includes ebooks in the fields of computer science, engineering, and technology. The publicly accessible portion of the collection includes classic works of literature and history, as well as speeches, government documents, and other resources pulled form sites such as Project Gutenberg and the Alex Catalogue of Electronic Texts.

Using a Kindle Fire that runs Fire OS 5.0+? You can now download the Libby app directly from the Amazon app store to use OverDrive on your Kindle Fire! Find a list of compatible devices here: bit.ly/fcpllibbyfire.

Download and open Libby, by OverDrive from the Amazon app store. You will need to have Fire OS 5.0+ and a compatible Fire tablet. Find a list of those devices here: bit.ly/fcpllibbyfire.

1. The most popular way is to send a file to the email address associated with your device. If you buy the Fire tablet on Amazon, it will already come preregistered with your Amazon account. A unique email address is being associated with your Fire, so that you can send your third-party ebooks right to it. You can find it in the Settings section. Here is how to find an email address for sending own ebooks to Kindle and Fire.

A great thing about ebooks from Project Gutenberg is that if the original print edition had illustrations, you will be also able to get them in the ebook version. If you want the illustrations, make sure to download Kindle (with images) file. Please, keep in mind that ebook files with images take much more space.

The catalog includes over 25,000,000 fully accessible ebooks and other text files. From here, you can also start browsing a collection of 1.3 million contemporary ebooks that you will be able to borrow for free once you register an account.

The ebook section is available at archive.org/details/texts. Sub-collections include American Libraries, Canadian Libraries, ebooks from Project Gutenberg, titles from the Million Books Project, and ebooks for children.

Currently, there are between 50,000 and 100,000 free ebooks on Smashwords. That number depends on how authors promote their publications. Sometimes they make an ebook free for a limited time. It usually happens with first volumes of book series.

Please, keep in mind that to access free books in the Kindle Store, you have to be signed in with your Amazon account and have a Kindle or Kindle app registered with the same credentials. Otherwise, you would not be able to get free ebooks from the Kindle Store to your device.

A catalog of free ebooks is an essential part of the website. On the top of a list, you will find the most popular categories, including literary fiction, fantasy, romance, thrillers, and young adult fiction.

Please note that not all titles are available in mobi format., and there is no way to filter ebooks by format, so you will have to check out Kindle compatibility once you find the ebook you would like to read.

Branding consultants Michael Cronan and Karin Hibma devised the Kindle name. Lab126 asked them to name the product, and they suggested "kindle", meaning to light a fire.[9] They felt this was an apt metaphor for reading and intellectual excitement.[10]

Amazon released the Kindle for PC application in late 2009, available for Microsoft Windows systems.[170] This application allows ebooks from Amazon's store or personal ebooks to be read on a personal computer, with no Kindle device required.[171] Amazon released a Kindle for Mac app for Apple Macintosh & OS X systems in early 2010.[172] In June 2010, Amazon released the Amazon Kindle for Android. Soon after the Android release, versions for the Apple iOS (iPhone and iPad) and BlackBerry OS phones were available.[173] In January 2011, Amazon released Kindle for Windows Phone.[174] In July 2011, Kindle for HP TouchPad (running webOS) was released in the U.S. as a beta version.[175] In August 2011, Amazon released an HTML5-based webapp for supported web browsers called Kindle Cloud Reader.[176] In 2013, Amazon has expressed no interest in releasing a separate Kindle application for Linux systems; the Cloud Reader can be used on supported browsers in Linux.[177]

Kindle users can borrow free eBooks from Baltimore County Public Library through BCPL's the Overdrive website or through the BCPL library catalog. Kindle eBooks are not available through the Cloud Library. You will need a BCPL library card or e-card or will need to register your library card from another library with BCPL.

The Overdrive collection of ebooks is available to customers with a BCPL library card in good standing, an Amazon account set up and a Kindle device or reading app registered with Amazon.

Instructions on how to use your Kindle with the library's Overdrive site are available at

But if you don't want another monthly subscription and don't want to continue giving your money to Amazon, take advantage of ebooks available with your library card. Browsing a digital catalog is not as magical as spending an afternoon looking over every shelf in a library, but such is the ebook life (no one says you can't read both!). We have a detailed how-to on this that you should check out, but here are some of the takeaways:

Visit the Overdrive website or our online catalog for Overdrive ebooks available for Kindle devices. Libby will offer you an option to read in the Libby app or if you would like the book downloaded to your Kindle device. 0852c4b9a8
