A little while back I had the opportunity to spend a fun evening with Lindsey from Liquid Catering, our favorite professional bartending company in Greenville, SC. I had picked up a bottle of Pearl Wedding Cake Vodka because it seemed like a fun challenge, and I reached out to her to create some celebratory wedding cocktail recipes.

After a little trial and error, we decided it was best to run the sanding sugar through a food processor to make it a bit more fine. Not for too long though! Just enough to break it into some smaller pieces. We ran a lemon slice around the glass and the smaller pieces held put, no problem!

Falls Church, officially the City of Falls Church, is an independent city in the U.S. state of Virginia. Falls Church is included in the Washington Metropolitan Area. Taking its name from The Falls Church, an 18th-century Anglican parish, Falls Church gained township status within Fairfax County in 1875. In 1948, it was incorporated as the City of Falls Church, an independent city with county-level governance status. It is also referred to as Falls Church City..

The mission of Falls Church Arts is to ensure that the arts are an essential part of the cultural environment of the city of Falls Church. To achieve this end, the FCA will conceive, develop and implement programs to foster the visual, performing, literary, and applied arts.

Elsewhere in the city, FCA also sponsors the year-long Gallery Without Walls program, Art in the Parks at the Cherry Hill Concerts (summer), art classes, and an annual Plein Air Festival (May-June). It also publishes an email newsletter.

Across America, microgrids are having a moment. They vary in design and scope, but a microgrid is basically a relatively small, local system that can generate, store, and/or distribute electricity, and can function off of the main grid if need be. They can be public or private, and consist of anything from a couple of neighbors sharing a solar panel to a bitcoin mine powered by its own wind farm. Some military stations, hospitals, and universities have long hosted backup generators to safeguard against power outages. But whereas those systems mostly rely on fossil fuels, the builders of newer microgrids are increasingly looking to renewables, especially solar.

The city paid for it, in part, with a $1.25 million grant from the state. In making the announcement, Suplizio thanked one person in particular: Joe Scarnati, then-president pro tempore of the Pennsylvania Senate.

How he did it remains opaque. Several people who spoke to Spotlight PA privately attributed his successes to a combination of charm and luck: Suplizio, they said, is charismatic, and he possesses a gift of gab that enables him to sell his vision for the city at every turn.

Former DuBois City Manager Ron Trzyna told Spotlight PA that the city did not give out bonuses to employees during his time in the position from 2001 to 2006, and questioned the practice during a public meeting of the City Council this past spring.

Aside from his work for the city, Suplizio held leadership positions with two other prominent local organizations: the DuBois Area United Way, where he served as executive director, and Community Days, an annual summer celebration in the city.

The many charges against him illustrate the tangled web of jobs and responsibilities that Suplizio juggled, sometimes with little oversight or accountability. Prosecutors allege he moved money in and out of the various bank accounts he managed at those organizations, and ultimately ended up stealing from them.

Law enforcement officials also allege Suplizio charged city taxpayers and the United Way for his cellphone and mileage expenses, and then claimed those amounts as unreimbursed business expenses on his taxes (which in turn lowered his taxable income).

DuBois City Council voted in August to negotiate a buyout with Suplizio for the remainder of his contract, which expires in March 2025. Suplizio, according to his contracts with the city, would be entitled to a lump sum cash payment, unused vacation and sick time pay, and retirement contributions.

Cherry has repeatedly said to the public that no money is missing from city coffers, although she has never explained how she reached that conclusion. But the subtext seems clear: Suplizio did not steal.

Chad Nichols, former coffee roaster, barista, and co-creator of The Intergalactic Nemesis: Little City was one of the few places in town that had a kind of cosmopolitan vibe. It wasn't a sloppy hippie hangout, where both the coffee and the ambience were afterthoughts. It had one of the few really good cups of espresso in the city.

Nelsen: Everyone who came through, you knew them by name and you'd have a little conversation. People want to have that exchange, like with a bartender. That's something that the best coffee shops have.

Tate: It was just an amazing time in our lives. Austin still is the best city I've ever lived in, but I don't quite love it like I used to. It was cheap, everyone knew each other, we still had water in creeks. It was our little city, and it was the best.

Initially, the city would impose property and sales taxes, but the property tax would ratchet down to zero over time. The business-friendly environment would draw new economic activity to Von Ormy, and eventually the town would cruise along on sales taxes alone.

There would be no charge for building permits, which Martinez de Vara said would be hand-delivered by city staff. The nanny state would be kept at bay, too. Want to shoot off fireworks? Blast away. Want to smoke in a bar? Light up. Teens wandering around at night? No curfew, no problem.

Reyes lives near I-35 in a distinct two-story blue house. A retired buyer for a beauty supply company, she moved from San Antonio to Von Ormy in 1982. When Martinez de Vara stepped down as mayor in 2015, he tapped Reyes to run. She had been an early supporter of the liberty city idea. But when I visited her this spring, she was counting down the days till her term expired in May.

The GOP had also taken notice. In 2011 and 2012, Martinez de Vara served as chief of staff to one-term Representative John Garza, a San Antonio Republican. Then, in 2014, Senator Konni Burton, a libertarian-leaning Republican from Fort Worth, brought him on as chief of staff. That session, Burton introduced Senate Bill 710, which would codify the liberty city model as an official form of municipal government, with restrictions on regulations, debt and the implementation of taxes. The bill died in committee.

Reyes thinks the liberty city experiment has failed. With increasing expenses, a population resistant to any taxes, and economic development dead in the water, she thinks the town is only a few years away from a fiscal crisis, when the commission will have to decide whether to take on debt.

There are tons of little neighborhoods and vibrant districts around Brighton to explore. My two favorite areas are mildly confusing, but equally fun areas to get lost in. The North Laine and the Lanes, not connected. The North Laine is an area of Brighton around the Royal Pavilion that is the bohemian, cultural side of the city. All my favorite cafes and shops are here, and I can easily spend hours walking up and down these streets, along with spending all my money.

Just down the road you can find the Lanes, which is a different shopping area of the city, and feels much more like a neighborhood out of a Charles Dickens novel. Here the streets are super narrow and winding, not wide and straight like the North Laine.

Seattle has seven customer service centers located throughout the city. These "little city halls" are where you can go to find information about Seattle services and programs and make various in-person payments. ff782bc1db
