Hello there! I'm an attorney and worldwide karaoke singer who's based in New York City. I've sung karaoke in 73 countries around the globe, on all 7 continents, plus Easter Island - as well as all 50 U.S. states! This website chronicles my World Karaoke Tour as well as my general travel adventures. Learn more

In that summer of 1993, which separated my first and second years of law school, I was studying law in Europe: 3 weeks in London (for a course in Comparative Litigation), followed by 3 weeks in Salzburg, Austria (for a course on Human Rights law, co-taught by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy). During the fortnight and a half when I was based in Salzburg, I joined some friends from the study-abroad program and took the train to Prague for a weekend. It never even occurred to me to suggest to my travelling companions that we seek a karaoke venue in the Czech capital, even thought most of them had been present at my London karaoke debut approximately two and one-half weeks earlier.

The third time was the charm. Followers of this website may recall that I required 3 visits to Italy before finally managing to karaoke in that country in November 2015. Similarly, my third visit to the nation that had by then become known as Czechia was the one that finally saw me sing into a mic in public. Visit the third took place during Labor Day Weekend, a long holiday weekend observed in the U.S. that usually falls in early September.

The longest karaoke marathon by an individual lasted 101 hr, 59 min and 15 sec and was achieved by Leonardo Polverelli, at the Astra Caffe, Pesaro, Italy, from 19 to 23 September 2011.Throughout the marathon attempt Polverelli sang a total of 1,295 songs, the event raised funds in support of Telethon.

Negishi was in his 40s when he came up with the idea of prototyping a mass-produced, coin-operated karaoke machine, branded "Sparko Box," after a colleague at the consumer electronics assembly business he ran in Tokyo criticized his singing.

Although Negishi was the first to create a karaoke machine, many people attribute the invention of karaoke to nightclub musician Daisuke Inoue, who independently invented his own karaoke machine in 1971. Inoue's contribution was to create versions of pop-song backing tracks in keys that could suit a variety of amateur singers. (Three additional Japanese inventors created versions of karaoke machines in the late 1960s and early 1970s.)
