Gone are the days when Bollywood was known for its musicals and enchanting tunes. Gone are the days when the uniqueness of Bollywood remained in its beautifully shot routine dance numbers and actors didn't mind "running around trees". While songs in today's times have become more of a tool for selling a film, their shelf life is falling by the day. Does that mean the time has come for Bollywood to do away with its musical numbers? Maybe, maybe not!

The actors might be struggling to make ends meet in a middle-class background of their characters, but when it is about the songs, producers don't mind crossing continents and shooting them anywhere from the Eiffel Tower to Iceland. At times, they even create elaborate sets to give that exuberant feel to a number. As a result, the budget of these songs occupies a major portion of the entire film's expenses. The songs "Party All Night" (6 crores) and "Malang" (5 crores) are the costliest in Bollywood till date. All for just 3 minutes?

A brilliant actor who can't dance will have a tough time making a mark in the industry. On the other hand, if he is okay in acting but a fabulous dancer, he is a "born" superstar! Sad but that's where Bollywood has got its standards. Take for example Salman Khan. Don't kill me for writing this, but he is an average actor. In fact, it is better to say that he has stopped acting. He just doesn't require it anymore. But when it is about his songs, the man has charisma oozing out of every pore. He ends up looking oh-so-entertaining on screen even with his peculiar "Hudd Hudd Dabangg" moves. So does that mean Bollywood is more about your appearance on the dance floor than it is about intense acting-backed scenes? Hell yes. Actors like Tiger Shroff, Suraj Pancholi, Shraddha Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha debuted just at the right time. Because no songs would definitely mean better time spent on polishing their acting skills.

Take, for instance, Sunny Deol. The man with dhai kilo ka haath is stupendous when it is about acting and action, but given a "Yaara O Yaara" and his weakest side comes to the forefront. Other actors like Ajay Devgan and Sanjay Dutt have also been forced to sing and dance till disaster struck their otherwise magnanimous personas. If these actors had got two-hour fast paced thrillers and action films with no songs, they would've probably come out with better performances.

While actors struggle to match steps with the choreography, actresses end up being the oomph factor. Considering our industry is already male dominated, and female actors have to fight to get deserving roles, regular songs have degraded their positioning in films even more. Producers today demand one club song, one remix and one romantic track from their composers. Sometimes films are sold majorly on their music value. And amid all this, heroines are reduced to nothing but eye candy and a prop for the heroes.

The world knows that Indian films are mostly about song and dance. While it is its major characteristic, it even ends up adding to the already long duration of Bollywood movies. And considering an international audience is used to much shorter Hollywood films, they definitely lose patience when a song pops up from nowhere in a Hindi film. Guess it pleases only the Indian and NRI audience. Remember when Lagaan went to the Oscars? Its makers had to trim the film to suit the Academy standards. We even heard all its songs were removed to shorten the film. If we plan to go global, we need to do away with this song and dance routine for sure.

A non-Indian producer will demand first a good script, a director and then a good cast. The music comes at the end. But in India it seems like you make the music album first, and then look to fill in the blanks with a connecting story later. Bollywood today has come down to being just about getting a director, a hero who can dance, an actress who can look glamorous and suit the songs. If the music sells, a major portion of profits are already covered by selling its audio, satellite and broadcast rights et al. Much before the movie releases.

Almost every film is made into a romantic musical. Bollywood has become so monotonous that even intense films cannot do without a forced item song. Whatever happened to other genres like action, tragedy and comedy? In Bollywood, songs complete everything. If they don't fit into the screenplay, there is one in either the opening or end credits. Hence we have romantic musical action films, romantic musical thrillers, romantic musical horror, romantic musical science fiction, romantic musical crime... Sigh!

Bollywood veteran Shabana Azmi had recently raised some serious concerns about top actresses doing item numbers with shallow lyrics. She said such songs needed to be removed from films asap. Many might argue that movies are a way of relaxation and entertainment, and totally disregard movies which are humble, low-budget and actually weighed on acting. But the question is, have our films become just a combination of superstars, big budgets and elaborate songs? 0852c4b9a8
