Zusammenfassung :
Alvin wachst in der Provinz auf und gilt als draufgangerischer Trunkenbold. Er bewirtschaftet ein kleines Stuck Land, dass keine grossen Ertrage abwirft und daher beginnt er bereits in jungen Jahren in den umliegenden Waldern zu jagen. Alvin beschliesst, um die Hand von Gracie Williams anzuhalten, die seinen Antrag nach einigem uberlegen auch annimmt. Auch als Ehemann prugelt er sich immer wieder mit anderen Saufern aus dem Dorf. Als er eines Abends nach Hause reitet schlagt der Blitz in seine Flinte ein. Dass Alvin dies unversehrt ubersteht, schreibt er Gott zu und beschliesst sein Leben zu andern und nun streng an die Bibel zu halten. Auf Alkohol und Gewalt will er zukunftig vollkommen verzichten. Als es darum geht, sich fur den Kriegsdienst bei der Armee zu stellen, versucht er mit seinen Wehrdienst zu verweigern. Doch sein Antrag wird in allen Instanzen abgelehnt - Alvin muss einrucken.
