The Human Science Interuniversitary House of Strasbourg has been concerned with the use of virtual worlds to place in situation some artefacts extracted from its collection for educational and anthropology study purposes. To enrich those worlds, the skills of ICube lab have been solicited to produce digital copies from this collection.
During one week, I thus digitized with a colleague a tenth of ethnographic items from the Dogon tribe in Mali. It was for us the opportunity to try for the very first time a structured light range scanner that we developed during the previous summer. The 3D scanning session has been completed by a photography campaign for the acquisition of colour. Here again, this project was a premiere, since it’s been the occasion for a test bed of some algorithms newly implemented in ExRealis for the picture based reconstruction of colour textures over 3D models.
All these tests have comfortably passed the exam, allowing the campaign to successfully come to the end ! Digital copies have been finally transferred to the Human Science House for integration to its virtual world project.
