Inaugural Season 2023
FRC Team 9315 was founded in January 2023 as the Coding Comets. They competed in the 2022-23 season as a community team under the sponsorship of NoMa STEAM, a 501(c)(3) organization that supports STEAM-focused afterschool programming for underserved and underrepresented students who reside or attend schools in the north Columbia area of South Carolina. After receiving its build kit more than three weeks after the January kick-off, the team of twelve ambitiously entered its first competition at the Electric City FIRST Robotics Competition in Anderson, SC where they earned the Rookie Inspiration Award. Just two weeks later, the team appeared in its second competition in Hartsville, South Carolina where it earned the Rookie All-Star Award. With this award, the team was invited to participate in the Peachtree District Competition in Emerson, Georgia where they interviewed with a team of judges to share their story. Due to their continued teamwork, resilience and tenacity, the team was awarded the Peachtree District’s Rookie Inspiration Award and was able to intermingle with teams representing both South Carolina and North Carolina during the two-day event.
January 7, 2023- North Charleston, SC. Nine high school students accompanied by 7 parents traveled to the lowcountry to learn all about FIRST Robotics and embarked upon an incredible challenge.
We transitioned to a community team and gained 3 new members. We set up shop at Middleton's Paint Next Generation where we began to design and build our first ever competition robot.
Our team debuted at the Electric City Robotics Competition in Anderson, SC in March2023 with 12 members.
Our coders and drivers setting up for a match once robot Ursa passed inspection. We were pleasantly surprised to earn the Rookie Inspiration Award.
We updated our robot and changed our strategy during the second qualifying event at Coker College.
Our hard work and determination earned us the Rookie All-Star Award and an opportunity to compete for the same award at the Peachtree District Finals.
All 12 comets, our mascot, 3 mentors and 6 parents caravanned to Emerson, Georgia where we met up with other South Carolina teams for the Peachtree District Championship.
We returned home with the Peachtree District Rookie Inspiration Award and met many other talented teams aiming to earn a spot in the Nationals.
During the off-season, several team members met to hone their skills in driving, coding and wiring. Ursa was improved upon a little more, just in time for the SC Robotics and Practical scrimmage where the team landed a spot on the second alliance team and walked away with a second place alliance trophy! Ursa's final ride for season 2023 was at the SC Robotics Invitational & Workshops (SCRIW) event at Dreher High School.
Ten team members particiated in the competition in Sumter, SC which gave members the opportunity to serve the team in different ways. Builders tried out driving and mechanics tried coding. It was a learning experience that landed an unexpected win.
During this final run of Ursa, five team members ran the show for the first half of the competition. It was all about having fun and celebrating a season of learning. Our coach and a team sibling enjoyed the pleasure to taking Ursa to the field for her final ride of the season.
The season’s experience not only encouraged the team to continue its journey with FIRST, it also sparked their interest in continuing the legacy of inspiring the next generation of scientists and mathematicians. In the fall of 2023, the Lego League Explore team was born. This team was formed to engage younger siblings of members of the Coding Comets as well as other children in grades 2-4 attending area schools. This program is the fist step to training a pipeline of students who are well-prepared to continue the legacy of Team 9315 while also gaining valuable skills that will equip them to live productive, self-sufficient lives. They will also have opportunities to contribute to the community in positive ways.
Members of Team 9315 spend a Saturday building a competition table for the new FIRST Lego League team.
The finished table is set up for a quick look. The next step is painting.
