Octaviano Ambrosio Larrazolo was the first Latino United States Senator in our nation's history. Although he was not on Capitol Hill for long, his impact in his home state of New Mexico and throughout the country are everlasting. Originally from the country of Mexico, Larrazolo and his family would seek refuge in the Arizona Territory, where he was under the care and supervision of a French-born Catholic bishop. Despite his initial inkling to move into the priesthood, Larrazolo would decide to merely study theology and teach the concepts to students. He would apply his superb academic skills outside of theology and open up his own law practice in Texas, where he would later be elected as a district attorney in 1890. Following this short stint as a district attorney, he would move yet again to the New Mexico Territory to get into local and territorial politics. He would lose several attempts at being a territorial delegate, but he never gave up hope in making sure his voice was heard. Throughout his public service career, Larrazolo made it clear that Latinos (who made up roughly 60% of the New Mexico Territory) must not be discriminated against in any future state constitution or piece of legislation. His efforts at the state constitutional convention in 1911 would enshrine protections for Latinos, including language safeguards and the assurance that there would not be separate school for Spanish and English-speaking children. These constitutional protections came after Larrazolo warned about the possibility that the political machine in the state wanted to impose Jim Crow-like policies on the state's majority-minority population. His efforts were so highly regarded that the Republican Party of New Mexico nominated Larrazolo (a lifelong Democrat) to be their nominee for Governor. Unfortunately for Larrazolo, his tenure was marred by labor strikes that agitated the left and income tax increases that infuriated the right, leading to the relatively popular governor being disavowed by his own party ... but he would not give up any hope. After some years in the private-sector, Larrazolo would win a special election for a United States Senate seat, which entitled him to only a few months in the legislative body. He would, however, promote one key piece of legislation, with funds being directed to the creation of an industrial school for hispanic youth in New Mexico. The first Latino United States Senator will be remembered for his decades of service, compassion, and vouching for equal justice under law.

Dolores Clara Fernández Huerta is a Mexican American labor leader, feminist, and civil rights activist. She is the founder of the Dolores Huerta Foundation and cofounder of the National Farm Workers Association. In her early years, inspired by her mother, she organized and became part of several movements and organizations that allowed her to break gender barriers and fight for equality among women. She was not only an inspiration to farm worker women, but she was an inspiration to women across the country. Dolores’s voice allowed her to speak fearlessly for others and challenge gender discrimination. Despite being put down by a life threatening injury, she continued to fight for the opportunities and rights women deserve. Martha P. Cotera is an influential librarian, writer, and activist. She advocated for the Chicano and Chicana Movements in the 1960s. The Chicano Movement, also referred to as “El Movimiento,” was a social and political movement led by mainly Mexicans and people of Mexican descent. The Chicano Movements main goals were to restore rights of the farmers, land, and reform education. Cotera was an advocate for education and she was put in charge of 28 libraries across the sate of Texas and was in charge of democratizing the library system. Cotera was involved in several activist organizations including PASSO (Political Association of Spanish Speaking Organizations) and the farmworkers movement. Cotera along with other activists and educators formed TEAMS (Texans for Educational Advancement for Mexican Americans) to help high school students organize student boycotts and protests. Additionally, Cotera helped gather resources for high school students participating in the boycotts and tutored them. As a part of the Chicano movement, she ran for a seat on the State Board of Education on the Raza Unida Party, which was a third political party focused on Chicano nationalism. This brought more women into the Raza Unida Party, and eventually Cotera alongside other women formed a group within the Raza Unida Party, called Mujeres de La Raza Unida. Mujeres de La Raza Unida advocated for more women to be recruited as members of La Raza Unida. In 1974, Cotera, along with others, founded the Chicana Research and Learning Center, which helped find funding for research and community projects with a focus on women of color. Cotera eventually founded the independent research and publishing company Information Systems Creation, which focused on publishing resource materials on and about Chicanos and Chicanas. Martha P. Cotera is an important activist in American history who focused on battling for rights of marginalized groups, women and people of color. Today, she remains involved in local politics and an activist for immigrant rights.

Hello! My name is Joan Baez. I am a folk singer, songwriter, and activist from Staten Island, NY. I was born on January 9, 1941, and am of Mexican and Scottish descent. I began writing songs in the 1960s when I was 19 years old. I used songwriting as a way to express myself and my social and political views. In 1963, I got to sing my song, “We Shall Overcome,” for thousands of people at the March on Washington. One of those people was Martin Luther King Jr. I continued to use my voice and my talent to share my beliefs in anti-violence, especially during the time of the Vietnam War. In the following decade, I released my critically-acclaimed album, Diamonds and Rust, in 1975. I even helped establish Amnesty International, a human rights organization. In 2007, I was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for the hard work and effort I put into the music industry and in human rights movements. I continue to put my efforts into the many ongoing movements today and hope to one day see a world where love is the answer. As I’ve said before, “That’s all nonviolence is - organized love.”

Eloisa Diaz Inzunza was born in Santiago, Chile, and lived from June25th, 1866 to November 1st, 1950. She was the first female medicalstudent to attend the University of Chile, and she would go on tobecome the first female doctor in not only Chile, but all of SouthAmerica. In 1880, she enrolled in the University of Chile andgraduated with her medical license on January 3rd, 1887. Diazworked as both a teacher and a physician from 1889 to 1897, until shewas promoted to School Medic Supervisor of Chile, which she heldfor 30 years. Diaz was also an avid philanthropist and establishedmany camps, kindergartens, and clinics for the poor anddisadvantaged. When she was named Director of the School MedicalService of Chile in 1911, one of her first orders of business wasactualizing free school breakfasts and mass student vaccination. Sheis a person who is certainly worthy of her title as “Illustrious Womanof America.”

Díaz trabajó comomaestra y médica de 1889 (mil ochocientos ochenta y nueve) a 1897 milochocientos noventa y siete), hasta que fue ascendida a Supervisora DeMédicos Escolares de Chile durante 30 (treinta) años. Díaz también fueun gran filántropo y creó muchos campamentos, jardines de infantes yclínicas para los pobres. Cuando se convirtió en Directora del ServicioMédico Escolar de Chile en 1911 (mil novecientos y once), una de lasprimeras cosas que hizo fue hacer desayunos escolares gratuitos yvacunar a los estudiantes. Ella es una persona que es muy digna de sutítulo de "Mujer Ilustre de América".
