German I is the first step in a three-year sequence to build basic German language skills. You'll learn beginner vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar, and explore German-speaking cultures. By the end, you should reach Novice Mid to Novice High proficiency. At this level, you'll use simple phrases and sentences in familiar contexts, understand basic information, and be understood by people familiar with language learners.
In German II, you'll continue developing your communication skills with new vocabulary and more complex grammar. You'll also continue learning about cultural topics. By the end of the year, you should reach Novice High to Intermediate Mid proficiency. At the Intermediate Mid level, you'll be able to combine what you know into short statements and sentences, understand more detailed information, and be generally understood by those used to language learners.
In German III, you'll strengthen your communication skills and read and discuss various cultural and literary texts. You'll write and speak more sophisticated German. By the end of the year, you should reach Intermediate High proficiency, meaning you'll be able to create with the language and combine what you know into connected sentences. This course will more explicitly prepare you for AP and IB courses by focusing on advanced listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills.
In the AP German course, you'll focus on communicating in real-life situations using listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. You'll use German almost all the time in class, learning vocabulary, cultural insights, and effective communication strategies. The goal is to communicate well, not just be perfect with grammar. By the end, you'll be ready for the AP exam and should reach Intermediate High to Advanced Mid proficiency, meaning you can handle various communication tasks, participate in conversations on many topics, and express your thoughts clearly and accurately.
