François DUCOBU

Professor of manufacturing processes, MSc, PhD, RA CIRP

ABOUT ME

I share my time between research and teaching activities in mechanical engineering at the Machine Design and Production Engineering Lab at the University of Mons, Belgium.

Research

My research activities deal with the manufacturing processes field (Research Institute for Science and Material Engineering of UMONS), and particularly forming of metals, composites and ceramics.

My historical activity concerns machining by the removal of chips with developments at the mesoscopic scale (finite element modelling of the area of the chip formation).

Additive Manufacturing and hybrid manufacturing (combination of several processes, additive and/or soustractive, in the same machine) are included in my current activities as well. From a general point of view, my activities combine experimental studies, and development of numerical models and their experimental validation.

These research activities are carried out in collaboration with research and teaching assistants and contract researchers appointed on research projects (I currently co-supervise a European project on composites and stacks machining, and two regional projects on Additive Manufacturing).

Teaching

My teaching activities cover topics of the machine design and production engineering field. They mainly deal with manufacturing processes, technical drawing, metrology and mechanical design.

In addition to the courses, a significant fraction of my activities concerns students projects (3rd Bachelor and 1st Master in Mechanical Engineering), internships (2nd Master in Mechanical Engineering) and Master's Theses (2nd Master).

Besides these activities for students from the Faculty of Engineering, a course dedicated to Additive Manufacturing is also offered to students from the Faculty of Sciences; it combines interventions from both Faculties.
