Ubiquitous and wearable computing solutions have been used to support children and adults with Neuro-Developmental Disorder (NDD), such as Intellectual Disability (ID) , Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Autism The design of these technologies, however, requires a deep understanding not only of what is possible from a clinical standpoint but also how the children with NDD themselves might understand and orient towards wearable technologies, such as a smartwatch.
Children with NDD struggle with self-regulation (i.e., controlling their behaviors and emotions to pursuits goals). Thus, it is needed the caregivers (e.g., parents, teachers) support them, either with motivational or emotional scaffolding. Motivational scaffolding involves the caregivers’ ability to initiate and sustains children enthusiasm for a task, by praise and encouragement, redirection of the children’s attention, or re-starting the goals of the task (i.e., co-regulation). Thus, supporting the collaboration between children with NDD and their caregivers is crucial.
