In car dashboards, warning light colors provide clues about the severity and urgency of a potential issue: red lights indicate immediate action, yellow/orange lights suggest a need for service, and green/blue lights indicate normal operation.
Here's a breakdown of the color meanings:
Red:
A red light signifies a serious problem that requires immediate attention, potentially endangering the vehicle's safety or causing engine damage. Pull over to a safe location and turn off the engine as soon as possible.
Yellow/Orange:
These lights indicate a warning or malfunction that doesn't require immediate action, but should be addressed as soon as possible. You may need to take your car to a mechanic for diagnosis and repair.
Green/Blue:
These lights typically indicate that a system is on or operating normally, such as headlights, fog lights, or cruise control.
Red Warnings:
1. Trunk open
This warning light comes on if the trunk is completely open or has not been closed properly.
2. Low fuel level in the tank
It is obvious what this warning light indicates. Once it lights up, it is recommended to refuel at the first opportunity. Depending on the car model, the symbol warns that approximately 5-10 liters of fuel are left. For small capacity tanks, the remaining 'reserve' is even less than five liters.
3. Engine temperature problems
More specifically, this warning light indicates that the engine has reached a dangerously high temperature. If this indicator comes on, it is advisable to stop the engine immediately and fix the problem before driving again.
4. Engine oil
The light can indicate several problems. The engine oil temperature may be too high, for example. It may also be too low. Another possibility is that the oil pressure is too low. In this case, too, it is recommended to turn off the engine and deal with the situation immediately.
5. Engine or emissions problems
Also known as "check engine", this dashboard light is activated when a problem is detected with the lambda probe, fuel tank cap, catalytic converter, spark plugs or other components within the engine.
6. Doors open
The indicator light comes on if one or more doors are open, while the engine is running or the ignition is in position 2, or the doors have not been closed properly.
7. Front fog lights on
This warning light comes on when you turn on the fog lights. The red color of the indicator is due to the fact that you can be fined if you drive with the fog lights on when there is no fog. Therefore, the symbol draws the driver's attention to ensure that they use the lights properly, justified.
8. Power steering problems
If this light comes on, it is recommended to check the power steering fluid level in the reservoir. If it is indeed low, it should be topped up as soon as possible. If the light continues to come on, a service visit is required.
It is very important to mention that this light can mean many more defects and can be caused by different problems, and a specialized diagnosis is the only solution to detect these problems.
9. Windshield fluid level is low
As the name clearly says, this warning light is activated when the windshield fluid level is approaching zero. In order for the indicator to go out, it is necessary to top up with fluid (the appropriate one for the season). Not all cars have such a warning light, in which case you will have to realize for yourself that you have run out of windshield fluid.
10. Worn brake pads
If this warning light comes on, it is probably time to replace the brake pads, as they are too worn to perform. Another possibility is that the dedicated sensor is faulty. Do not rule out any potential problems with the brake fluid level.
13. Problems with the towing system
These can be of two types: 1) a malfunction in the trailer lights; 2) improper locking of the retractable towbar.
14. Hood Open
This warning light comes on when the hood of the car is open. Obviously, this can drastically reduce visibility and expose the driver and passengers to the risk of serious injury. In this situation, you must urgently pull over and close the hood. It is very important to note that most cars do not have such a warning light.
15. Air suspension problems
The illumination of this symbol can indicate several problems with the air suspension, such as air leaks or sensor malfunctions. To accurately identify the error, you should go to a car service.
16. Lane departure warning
In the case of cars equipped with a lane keeping system, this warning light comes on to draw the driver's attention that the car is no longer properly positioned in its lane.
17. Lambda sensor failure
If this warning light comes on, it is possible that the injection system is limiting the maximum engine power and throttle response. In other words, the engine will no longer function properly, so a service visit is required as soon as possible.
18. Seat belt not fastened
This indicator is activated if the driver or front passenger does not have their seat belt fastened while the car is moving. The light signal is accompanied by an acoustic signal. Both are automatically deactivated when the seat belt is fastened.
19. Warning of the distance to another vehicle
If the distance to another vehicle drops below the minimum safe limit, this indicator tells you that there is a risk of a collision. Most of the time, the visual warning is also accompanied by an acoustic warning.
20. Parking brake engaged
If this indicator is active, it means that the parking brake is in the ON position and that the vehicle should be immobilized. Accompanied by another indicator, such as the brake pad wear indicator (no. 10 on the list), it may signal a malfunction in the braking system.
21. Battery or alternator problems
This light always comes on when you start your car, but it should go off after a few seconds. If it stays on, it could indicate a problem with the battery, alternator, or a wiring harness. You will be without power and your car will not start for many hours after you see this light on your dashboard if it comes on and stays on while you are driving. Most of the time, you have a very weak battery at that point, a faulty charging relay, or a seriously faulty alternator. Stop your car in a safe place and check.
22. Braking system
This warning light can come on when the handbrake is on, but it can also warn of a problem with the brake system. For example, it may indicate a brake pedal failure or a low brake fluid level. It can also indicate other possible brake system failures, but this depends on the car it is installed on.
23. Airbag problems
The warning light comes on if the airbag is either deactivated or not working properly. In the latter case, the passive safety system may be triggered for no reason or, on the contrary, may not open in the event of an accident.
24. ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) Warning
In this case, it could be a serious problem. If there is indeed a fault with the ABS system, the driver may lose control of the car every time they brake suddenly. In the best case, the error could only concern the ABS sensors, not the mechanism itself. Whatever the explanation, the indicator light means that you need to go to a car service urgently. During the winter, some cars may find the ABS warning light on if the sensors have frozen or if the floor has accumulated enough snow and ice to affect their operation. Be warned that the ABS system will not work at all if the warning light is on.
Yellow/Orange indicates:
25. Stability control system
This warning light refers to traction control. The indicator generally flashes when the vehicle is driving on a surface with low traction, such as an icy road, and remains on constantly when the system is deactivated or malfunctioning. In the latter case, it is recommended to make an appointment with a car service.
26. Water in the fuel filter
The engine should be stopped as soon as this warning light comes on. The next step is to remove the water from the filter or, if this is not possible, replace the filter.
27. Rear window defroster
The respective indicator lights up when the rear window defogger and/or defroster button is pressed.
28. Windscreen defroster
Similarly, this warning light is activated when the windscreen demisting and/or defrosting button is pressed.
29. Rain sensor
If the "Rain sensor" warning light comes on in the dashboard, it means that it is not working properly. It is best to call a car service to fix the problem.
30. Automatic mode for windshield wipers activated
If this dashboard warning light is on, it means that the automatic mode of the windshield wipers is activated, which involves operating them based on data collected by the optical sensor.
31. Spoiler warning
This indicator warns that there is a malfunction in the spoiler, which provides a higher level of downforce to the vehicle at high speed.
32. Convertible Top Warning
In this situation, the automatic convertible top system is not working properly or has encountered a problem in the opening or closing process and you cannot exceed a speed preset by the manufacturer under these conditions. Typically, the maximum possible speed for a convertible with the top in the process of being folded is 50 km/h, but many models need to go slower during the operation.
33. Adaptive Headlights
Problems with the adaptive headlight system can be of many types. They are listed in the car's technical book. Most likely, the dedicated sensor is covered by road dirt or snow.
34. Headlight leveling control
If this warning light comes on, the headlight beam is no longer adjusted correctly or is no longer possible. Driving in the dark should be avoided until the problem has been rectified by a garage. Before continuing to drive at night, check the headlight beam alignment.
35. Service required
This indicator announces that the vehicle owner must schedule a service or inspection. The reasons are diverse, but an OBD diagnosis is necessary to explain the reason for this warning light.
36. Airbag deactivated
This warning light confirms that the airbag has been voluntarily deactivated.
37. Particulate filter warning
This warning light usually comes on when the particulate filter regeneration has not been carried out under optimal conditions. In this situation, it is recommended to drive at a constant speed of approximately 60 km/h for a distance of several kilometres.
38. Hill Descent Assist System
This indicator lights up when the 'Hill Descent Assist' function is activated.
39. Brake light warning
If this warning light comes on, it means that a brake light bulb has burned out and should be replaced at the first opportunity.
40. Burnt out bulb
This dashboard light can refer to headlights, taillights, turn signals, or any other bulb. If the light comes on, you should pull over at the first opportunity, identify the broken bulb, and replace it as soon as possible. Otherwise, the Police can fine you. And yes, you can even lose your car registration for this.
41. Press the clutch pedal
By lighting up this warning light, the driver is asked to press the clutch pedal in order to start the engine.
42. Key not in the car
Available on cars with keyless entry and start, this warning light indicates that the key is not detected in the passenger compartment. It is not possible to start the engine until the key is detected, and turning it off under these conditions will not be followed by restarting until it appears. Very important: if you know where the key is and you absolutely want to turn off the engine, press the Start/Stop button for several seconds and it will be turned off.
43. Light sensor problems
If there is a fault with this system, turning on the headlights will have to be done manually.
44. Winter mode
If the driver activates the winter mode switch, the associated dashboard warning light will automatically come on. In other cars, this warning light may appear on the dashboard if the outside temperature is below four (4) degrees Celsius and indicates an increased risk of skidding.
45. Low Tire Pressure
Also known as the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), this warning light indicates that one or more tires have under-inflation. There is also a chance that the fault is electronic, meaning that a sensor in the system is no longer working properly. The pressure must be 'memorized' by the system every time a tire is changed or the tire pressure is changed.
A recent survey revealed that 49% of young drivers do not know what the tire pressure warning light means.
46. Low temperature warning
The indicator comes on when the outside temperature approaches 0 degrees Celsius, as there is then a risk of ice forming on the road. Similar to indicator number 44 on this list.
47. Spark plugs / Preheat warning
Only valid for cars with diesel engines, this warning light can indicate a problem with the spark plugs, a fault with the brake pedal contact or problems with the exhaust/pressure and temperature sensor. There is also the possibility of a problem with the spark plug preheating relay.
48. Rear fog lights on
Like its counterpart, this dashboard warning light comes on when you turn on the fog lights – in this case, the taillights. We remind you that unjustified use of fog lights can be punished with a misdemeanor fine.
Green/Blue Indicates:
49. Cruise control active
This warning light illuminates to indicate that the Cruise Control option is active, meaning that a constant speed is maintained automatically. The indicator goes out when any pedal is pressed, which deactivates the Cruise Control mode.
50. Direction of signaling
The indicator shows the direction in which signaling is being performed, accompanied by an intermittent acoustic signal. If any of the signaling bulbs are burned out, the rhythm of the acoustic signal will increase.
51. Press the brake pedal
This warning light applies to cars with an automatic gearbox and requires the brake pedal to be pressed to start the engine.
52. Steering wheel locked
This announces that the car's anti-theft system has locked the steering wheel, the key no longer being in the ignition.
53. Low beam indicator
It is activated when the low beam is turned on.
54. Dipped or side lights on
When the side lights are on, this dashboard warning light will also come on.
55. High beam indicator
This warning light comes on when the high beam is activated.
