Simple!
Divestment is the opposite of Investment. Therefore, by calling for Fossil Fuel Divestment, we call on UWA to take away fossil fuel companies from its investment portfolio.
As one of the leading Australian universities in the Group of 8 (Go8), UWA has the duty to demonstrate committed climate action. Yet, UWA has shown disappointing track records in supporting the heavily-polluting fossil fuel industry in times of alarming global climate crisis.

At this year's UWA Student Guild Election, in week 8, we have the opportunity to vote on a very special referendum.
It will address the student opinion on how the University invests it's money - more specifically, whether it should invest in fossil fuel companies. Regardless of whether you want to vote for student council candidates as well, you can cast a YES or NO vote to the following question:
“Should the University of Western Australia (UWA) take action on the climate crisis by divesting from fossil fuels (exclude fossil fuel companies from its investment portfolio)?”
This is our chance to show the University what we value and what we expect from them. Fossil Free UWA encourages all students to vote YES to this question to further the cause of the divestment campaign on this campus.
Let's take meaningful action on climate change by participating in this referendum.

Fossil fuel divestment commonly refers to companies listed in the Carbon Underground 200 (TM).
This is a group of companies that are considered the 200 largest coal and oil/gas reserve owners in the world. You can find out more about this term at the Fossil Free Funds website.
