When playing Minecraft on Xbox, Windows, or Android and iOS mobile devices, you can sign in with your Microsoft account and use your Xbox gamertag to save your progress, purchases, and play online with your friends using Realms.

If you're creating a Minecraft account for a child, you might want to consider a "child account". A child account is an account for those under the age of 16 for the US & EU, 19 for South Korea, and allows adults to modify certain settings to make the experience safer, such as enabling/disabling multiplayer. However, a child account cannot exist without an adult Microsoft account tied to it. So, in order to set up Minecraft for a child, you will need a minimum of two accounts.

soo basically, I tried logging into my mircosoft account on my ps4 and its been stuck on a loading screen saying "Signing in with your Microsoft Account" for a good hour or two now, I read online and many places said to come here and ask for help, so thats what Im doing

Since 2021, you need a Microsoft account in order to play Minecraft. Before this point, players were able to play Minecraft simply with a Mojang account, but this legacy style of account is no longer enough to start playing Minecraft.

If you are a lapsed player returning to Minecraft with a Mojang account, then you'll need to migrate your Mojang account to a Microsoft account before you can start playing. To do this, open up the Minecraft Launcher and login with your Mojang account. Then click the big green "Move My Account" button and follow the instructions on-screen.

That concludes this quick guide on whether you need a Microsoft account to start playing Minecraft.
