You will need to know when and where you want to have your ceremony when you complete your application for a licence.
You should also choose an alternative venue in the event that the weather prevents you from having your ceremony at your primary venue.
In New Zealand, your ceremony must be administered by an appointed celebrant. You can find all the names of celebrants in your area here: https://celebrants.dia.govt.nz/
You will need to contact your celebrant and agree on a time and place before applying for your licence.
Your celebrant will meet with you to discuss your ideas for the ceremony as well as the legal requirements.
Celebrant costs are separate from the licence cost.
The licence confirms it’s legal for you to marry.
Both a marriage and a civil union license cost $150.
NOTE: When applying for a licence, you can also order your marriage certificate/certificate of civil union. I would advise to do this.
Your marriage or civil union must be witnessed by at least two people. Witnesses must be present during the ceremony and they will sign your documents afterward.
Anyone can be a witness to your marriage/union as long as they are able to understand the legal document that they are signing. Family, friends and strangers can all be witnesses!
