The International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) is a professional organization that represents forensic nurses worldwide. It provides universal access to forensic nursing care to patients impacted by trauma and violence (IAFN, 2023). Many health care agencies look to this association for guidance on standards of care in terms of forensic nursing, advanced leadership skills, and evidenced based practice (IAFN, 2023).
The IAFN offers a variety of educational materials including online courses, webinars, and workshops, all to help forensic nurses stay up to date with the best practices and trends in the field (IAFN, 2023).
The organization provides certifications such as the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) certificate which is internationally recognized and enhances professional credibility (IAFN, 2023).
The IAFN hosts an annual conference that brings together forensic nursing professionals from around the world to share their knowledge and experience, gain networking opportunities, and participate in professional development activities (IAFN, 2023).
The IAFN publishes their own “Journal of Forensic Nursing” which features peer-reviewed and scholarly articles on research, practice, and forensic nursing policies (IAFN, 2023).
The IAFN also features a project that works with Indigenous people called the Indigenous Sexual Assault & Abuse Clearinghouse (ISAAC). They offer scholarships for education, technical assistance and training in various topics, a resource helpline, and a complete breakdown of their individualised SANE program (IAFN, 2023).
