I have always enjoyed Samuel Hayden as a character in the modern Doom series. He's a cunning and deceptive character that is really unlike any other that I've seen. After the ending of Doom (2016), I was naievely caught off guard by his betrayal and only when replaying the game realised that in clear view it was Samuel Hayden who the Slayer was unknowingly helping through the course of the game.
With the marketing campaign for Doom Eternal, I was keenly interested in how Samuel Hayden's character would evolve now that he held the Crucible. After all, this item was what he sought after so profoundly in the previous game, so what horrors would he unleash unto the universe? Nothing. He's defeated before the game can begin, later becomes wrapped up in the Maykr storyline and by the end of the games first DLC, he's tossed asside and so unlike the character we knew from Doom (2016) it might as well be somebody else.
Personally, I felt this was a spit in the face for fans of Samuel Hayden and have always thought this to be the weakest part of Doom Eternal's story. In the lead up to Doom Eternal, myself and my brother often wondered what Dr Hayden would do next... An argent robot army? The UAC giving demons argent energy enhancements? Enslaving humanity and dooming Earth to eternal suffering? Who knew it'd be an off screen defeat...
Fueled with a passion to right this wrong, in 2021 after completing the Ancient Gods Part One I began work on a concept that wouldn't ignore what had happened to Samuel Hayden, but instead embrace it as just another step in his long-winded plan. I've always seen the Slayer as a pawn for Samuel to use through manipulative means. So using this, and expanding on the idea after completing the Ancient Gods Part Two with the new found information there, I got to work on the concept you can see below.
Perhaps it's quite ambitious, but some part of me felt I needed to get this idea out there. Of course between 2021 and 2026 there were many changes in my personal life that made it not possible to share this concept sooner, but now with the release of Doom: The Dark Ages - Revelations I felt now was the perfect time for Doom Fans to look towards a possible future antagonist of the series. One that had been hidden in plain sight all along...
Though I admit the concept is not perfect, it has loop-holes and even questionable choices such as The Father not being present or active in the narritive, I thought it was still something I ought to share. I've always felt that a concept, regardless of quality can always be improved. So with enough feedback in future I may very well do exactly that. Regardless, this idea may be out of date as it was finalised in 2025 and my knowledge of Doom: The Dark Ages lore was next to none as I hadn't played it until July of 2026. Forgive me if there are inconsistancies with the story given, but I hope with an open mind it may insprire some ideas of your own for the future of the Doom series.
Thank you,

After Samur’s defeat to the Slayer in Doom Eternal, he flees the arena to the red forests that surround The Holt. Deep amongst the trees he finds a dilapidated shrine, overgrown but grandiose in its design. Looking to heal his wounds, he ventures into this shrine and discovers what was once the body of the most powerful Maykr. Samur would in fact find what remains of the Father’s body, a legendary suit of armour, one which commands the Maykr hivemind.
Using this armour, Samur may yet stand a chance at revenge against The Slayer… But he soon realised, without The Father’s life essence, nothing would have enough power to sustain control over the armour... Unless the Crucible's Argent Energy could subsitute. Samur would waste no time in returning to the Slayer's Fortress of Doom to retrive the now unattended legendary artifact, the Crucible.
Returning to the shrine deep within Urdak, Samur now wielded the Crucible once more. Wasting no time, he powered the Father’s armour and entangled his body within it. Samur’s transfiguration had reached a point of no return, even though he was Maykr, his appearance was undoubtably demonic in nature. This was beginning to have a n effect on him, and he could feel himself becoming maddened with thoughts of rage. Visions of his creators, both the Father and the Dark Lord clouded his mind and better sense of judgement…
Wishing this madness to end, Samur remembered what he had been researching when he was stationed on Mars. There were six beings hidden deep within Hell and the Cosmos, six being that when pleased would grant a powerful servant a wish… These six beings were known as the Archdemons.
The base form of Samur after the transfiguration underwent its full effect and corrupted his body and mind.
The lightweight armour that Samur built, enhanced by the power of the Crucible within his chest, and the six Archdemons.
The final form of Samuel Hayden was stolen from the Father's lost Maykr armour. Now enhanced by the Crucible and six Archdemons, Samur can reign over Urdak and Hell.
Samuel Hayden and the Slayer stand across from each other, each having gone through many trials and challenges along the way. In some way their journey through the Sequel to Doom Eternal was similar, the Slayer’s path was paved with blood and Samur’s was paved with lies and deceit but each of them journeyed through the same lands.
Samur, now Argent Samur appears both divine yet demonic. With the help of the Archdemons and his new Maykrs, Argent Samur was able to fuse the strongest elements of Immorian design and Maykr design into one suit of armour. This armour is unlike that of the Father’s, it fits his natural body and allows him to move around swiftly. This light suit of armour will allow Samur to channel argent energy freely through the power of the Crucible within his chest. Naturally, this is a noticeable weak-point within the armour but without it he wouldn’t be nearly as powerful.
Commanding the Maykrs and the Demons, Argent Samur will once again battle the Slayer in an attempt at revenge. This fight will have two stages, and at half health all of Argent Samur’s attacks will chain together creating an endless combo leading to devastating results. Samuel Hayden once said that he knew that he could not defeat the Slayer, but if he could weaken him for the Dark Lord then that will be victory enough, for Samur would ultimately cheat death…
This fight was designed to be a fast-paced and frantic fight that begins slowly to introduce the player to Argent Samur's movement, mechanics and attacks. Progression in this fight is determined by damage dealt leading to a stagger. When staggered, Argent Samur will need to be blood-punched in order to reach the next stage of the fight. After 2 blood-punches, he will endlessly combo his attacks leaving little room for error.
Argent Samur will swap between grounded combat and aerial combat, spouting wings from his back. When airborne he will open portals and attack through it to catch the player off guard. When grounded, he will use the Crucible to perform a powerful flurry of strikes, sending out projectiles much like a Dread Knight. Getting hit will guarantee a finisher will be landed, dealing critical damage.
This fight is a blend between the Samur Maykr fight from The Ancient Gods Part One and what I thought a PvP battle against another Slayer would look like.
Argent Samur will begin to attract the surroundings toward him, forming a cocoon from the debris. Quickly, the floor will give out from beneath you and you must now race to the top of the Maykr Sanctum to avoid being pulled in. This part of the fight is an intermission of sorts, a chance for you to change focus and use some platforming skills. You will need to grapple and climb your way up a very tall Maykr tower under a time-limit and once you reach the top, jump on to a nearby asteroid for safety. If you don’t make it in time, the entire level will be dragged down into a black-hole and you will fail the fight.
Jettisoning from the base of the Maykr Sanctum to be in line with the asteroid, dragging the ruins of Urdak with it is the cocoon that Samur wrapped around himself. It’s appearance is biblical, wheels within wheels and 25 eyes across their circumference. Each eye must be shot off and will collapse after taking damage from any weapon, so the chain-gun here would work really well. The arena is a donut shaped asteroid with Samur’s Cocoon placed in the centre. From the ground will rise demons to halt your progress, and falling from the skies are Maykrs to support the demons.
I decided to try my hand at illustrating the arena for you all and drew this picture. I never claimed to be an artist, but at least it’s not AI garbage… As you can see, the Samur Cocoon would be central around the donut shaped asteroid and while I somehow forgot to draw the eye wheels around it on the main drawing, I did include a mock-up just above. If you want to see this image in more detail, check out my website, The FooVerse, linked below.
Once you have destroyed each of the 25 eyes, the cocoon’s rings will become unstable and crumble to dust. As the cocoon lays motionless and defenceless a rush of Argent Energy surges through the asteroid and powers up your BFG, letting you unleash a powerful blast into the cocoon. Then, in the vacuum of space on an asteroid surrounded by the remains of New Urdak, the Slayer will look up from the blinding light to see the horror that had immerged from the cocoon. It was Samur, purified, perfected, cursed and yet with the appearance of a god like being.
Pure Samur, the True Maykr God, imbued with the powers of all six Arch-Demons. From the darkness of space, a red glow immerged revealing the Crucible, enhanced to match the size and strength of its wielder. Before the Slayer was a titan of legend, a god-like being that had the power to strike him down effortlessly. Pure Samur will boast about his strength, reveal the Arch Demons had a hand in his plans and begin to manipulate space around you to create a ring of asteroids.

Pure Samur will boast about his strength, reveal the Arch Demons had a hand in his plans and begin to manipulate space around you to create a ring of asteroids.
Inspired by the Icon of Sin, the battle against Pure Samur will see the player hopping between ever vanishing mini-arenas that are shaped into floating asteroids. You will focus your attention between Maykrs, Demons and Pure Samur himself, leading to a tense battle that ensures players have mastered the mechanics and combat of the game.
Your goal is to weaken Pure Samur's shields via plasma or rapid attacks, then land a powerful and precise shot on one of his six cursed wing eyes. In doing so will permanatly disable one of Samur's curses gifted to him by the Archdemons.
Over the course of the fight it should feel as if you are growing stronger and gaining an upperhand over Samur, and after all six eyes are destroyed he will now only rely on the Crucible. He will destroy all arenas but 3, forcing the confrontation to be much more intimate and dangerous.
After all six wing eyes are destroyed, you must stagger Pure Samur and grapple to his life-core and initiate a glory kill to end the fight...
By destroying just one of Pure Samur’s wing eyes will lift one of the six curses. Over the course of the fight, it should feel as if he is growing weaker and you’re gaining the upper hand. After all six eyes have been destroyed, Pure Samur will be noticeably slower but will now rely on the Crucible for every attack which will prove fatal. Despite this, his shield no longer works and you will be able to grapple to his core and land the killing blow.
Infernal Aegis:
This is a defensive curse that surrounds Samur with flaming brimstone that rotates around his body. While it cannot be destroyed it does have openings which you need to time your shots through.
Countering this attack will be easiest with a hit-scan weapon like the Ballista or Heavy Cannon as you won’t need to account for travel time like with a Rocket Launcher.
This ability was heavily inspired by the Parasite Queen boss from Metroid Prime. It was a stationary boss but because of when you were allowed to attack, it forced players to be more precise with their actions.
Unholy Dominion:
Samur buffs one of the demons in the arena with an aura that acts like a mobile buff totem. The marked demon supercharges all enemies nearby making it important to eliminate before continuing with the primary target. I like this cursed ability because it’s something you could ignore for a little while, even off-set with good movement too but it’ll eventually catch up to you. Playing between fighting Samur and dealing with a horde of Demons and Maykrs, it would make the fight a lot more dynamic as you swap between targets. This curse will also give reason to why Samur gains control over both demons and Maykrs during this second phase.
Unholy Judgement:
The Unholy Judgement will see meteors fall onto the arenas and shroud where they land in a deep purple flame. Touching this flame will cripple the Slayer, leaving him unable to Dash for 10 seconds and rapidly draining all shields. This attack is relatively passive and not targeted at you but instead, at any random mini-arena, if you’re careless in your movement then this could be a make or break moment.
Sinful Maelstrom:
One of the more devastating abilities, the Sinful Maelstrom will act as a small black hole that redirects all of your projectiles towards it no matter where you are. It will slowly drag the Slayer towards it too, starting off weak but growing stronger as time goes on. The only way to remove the Maelstrom is to land a precise hit with either the Ballista or Heavy Cannon.
Each projectile is consumes will be sent hurling back towards the Slayer at double the speed. This can quickly get out of hand if you’re unaware that the attack is active. Fortunately, destroying the maelstrom will disable the attack for at least 1 minute and 30 seconds.
Armageddon of Doom:
The Armageddon of Doom will be a charged attack that if you’re paying attention while jumping between arenas, you are able to interrupt. Channelling the Argent Energy surging through him, Samur will unleash an impossibly powerful laser beam moving across all floating arenas in a circular motion, twice. Since the arenas are situated around Samur circularly, he’s able to remain in the centre and spin around with this attack. Getting hit by this laser directly will deal a percentage of damage, rather than a flat number and since it can be avoided I have no issue making it 95% of your total health and armour values. It’s not enough to kill you but is enough to set you back majorly. Especially if you’re surrounded by demons or in a vulnerable position at the time. But remember, Samur will have enough charge in this attack for two sweeps of every planetoid. So if you’re not vigilant enough on the second run, it will kill you unfortunately as the second run would have a set amount of damage. This attack I believe forces players to try their best to micromanage health and pay attention to their surroundings, both are skills any good player already has. You can dodge this attack by either using grapple points above every mini-arena or by staying low and not airborne.
Eyes of Annihilation:
The Eyes of Annihilation will be the final curse used by Pure Samur. This attack will only activate after all of Samur’s weak points have been destroyed and cause each wing-eye to create a laser in the shape of a pentagram. This laser attack will slowly move downward and scorch every mini-arena with hellfire in the shape of the pentagram. This permanent alteration to the battlefield will force you to move very deliberately to avoid damage from then onward. Crawling from out of the the Hellfire will be phantoms of previously fought bosses throughout your journey. As this concept is aimed at a sequel to Doom Eternal, I don’t know what that might look like, but one could imagine something like a simplified Gladiator (from Doom Eternal) crawling out. Each phantom would have one 1 hit point, but would deal the full amount of damage. Perhaps some purpose built bosses could return, like a simplified Icon of Sin or Spider Mastermind? Really the possibilities are endless here, anything could immerge.
This attack would also destroy the majority of the asteroid arenas until there are only 3 surrounding Pure Samur. Since he is without the curses abilities now, there is little need for the extra space.
In the final act of this battle, the ever Wrathful Samur will be without the power of the Archdemons and must now rely entirely on the Crucible's strength to thwart the Slayer.
In this final act of desperation for revenge, Wrathful Samur will summon a horde of Demons and Maykrs to defend him as he fires lasers that scorch the earth and tries to kill the Slayer with the most powerful weapon of all, the Crucible.
The Slayer, despite being weakened and without his auxiliaries was enhanced by an overflow of surging Argent Energy that greatly increased the effectiveness of his Super Shotgun and his own Crucible Blade.
As the armour is weakened and the Archdemon's curses are lifted, so has Samur's resistance to the transfiguration. Through the divine guise sprouts his truest self, a monster of his own making. The Slayer here will land the finishing blow, slicing the false god clean in half and leaving Urdak, and himself into regions unknown...
Samur promised his soul to the Six Archdemons for it to be used to ressurect the Dark Lord. In exchange, Samur recieved dominion over the Demons, Maykrs and the power to infect and corrupt the minds of men. Using this power he truly was the most powerful being in existance for a time... He knew all the while this power would be short-lived and if he could not defeat the Slayer, he would have to die so the Dark Lord could return.
What the Archdemons were never aware of however, was Samur's Lazarus Plan. Back in his years as Samuel Hayden, he discovered the secret of imortality. A means of transferring conciousness between hosts and a way to split his soul between other beings.
In doing so, he could return in a new flesh after his defeat with a new soul, effectively circumventing the promise he made to the Archdemons. They would still recieve a soul of his, but not his full being. This was his plan to escape death and when the time was right, he would strike both the Dark Lord and the Slayer down and rule over what existed, creating life in his own image, perfecting the world as he saw fit.

The basis of this concept stemmed from Emerson Tung's Maykr Ideation from Doom Eternal. One could assume this early design for Maykrs would likely have been used for the Khan Maykr or perhaps even The Father.
Either way, it inspired this concept and after seeing how grand its design was I just ran wild with ideas. Without Emerson Tung's concept art here, I never would've had this idea to the scale it ended up being, so a heartfelt thank you goes out to them.
Another huge thank you goes out to the creator of the 3D model based off Emerson Tung's concept art.

During the development of this concept, I had no idea what to use to visually represent the Archdemons. I originally planned on using the one image of Archdemon, Erebus that is circulating online but I thought it wouldn't really encapsulate Samur's journey by just showing one of the six.
As I hold a very strong stance against generative AI, my next step was either to draw the Archdemons myself or contact an artist to commission one. Since these concept videos are non-profit and aren't seen by large audiences I was swayed away from this idea. Although, should any artists be reading, I would love to get in contact with you!
In the end, since it took so long for this idea to be made and released, William Bao's concept art for statues in Doom: The Dark Ages were very reminiscent of what I imagined the Archdemons to look like, and so their likeness served to fill this role.
And finally, I thought it would be nice to share with you all some alternate angles of the key art I made for this concept video in Source Filmmaker. This software is what I've used and will likely continue to use to make these art pieces and this project shown here was one that took arguably the most amount of effort to create. It lead me down a path that resulted in me modifying the software to uncap the 2GB RAM limit and install quite a few patches to continue being able to work on it. It got so bad that I actually couldn't open to project file anymore. Ever since this project here I've been unrestricted (so far) in what I can produce. I'm looking forward to the next big one.
