Eventually, my writing career, my family and travel pushed all of that to the side. But this pandemic has created a lot of free time, and earlier this week I decided it was time to find some creative ways to write a story or two.
So, I spent days researching the stats and accomplishments of the players selected to our Dade and Broward teams as well as the greatest players in football history to create a rating system as authentic as possible. Since the basis for the all-time high school football teams we selected extended to what those players accomplished at the highest levels of the game, only the best of the best should receive high marks.
This simulator allows you to even play the games without having to sit and watch them. They can quickly simulate a head-to-head meeting 1,000 times and tell you who won the most and what the average score was between the teams.
Receiver, though, is loaded for both counties. One could argue that Broward gets the edge because of Hall of Famers Michael Irvin and Isaac Bruce as well as one-time Pro Bowl selection Brian Blades. But Dade is deeper with nine receivers all-time having been selected to at least one Pro Bowl. The top three: Andre Johnson, Antonio Brown and Chad Johnson, who earned multiple All-Pro selections and played in at least six Pro Bowls each.
At linebacker, Dade features Hall of Famer Derrick Thomas and three more Pro Bowlers in Jonathan Vilma, David Little and Lavonte David. Broward has three Pro Bowlers led by multi-time selections Jon Beason and Ryan Shazier.
Broward had home-field advantage (that does a play a factor in the simulation) and the game was played in the rain. A game of American football, despite usually lasting for over three hours, only contains about 15 to 20 minutes of action. There's a lot of waiting, milling around, chatting, huddling, lining up, yelling, looking, more yelling, and then an inevitable time-out whistle so there can be a long discussion with the coach, more milling, lining up, and yelling. When the ball is finally snapped, the actual play lasts for, what, 10 seconds?
And then while everyone involved mills around again it's time for us to watch those 10 seconds of action in slow motion instant replays from 14 different angles that can last several minutes. Hence the three hour game time.
It honestly makes it hard to finish playing a single game because even during a routine play something bizarre and wonderful almost always happens that requires me to watch the replay a couple dozen times:
One of the best things that can happen is when the game's invisible math decides that the play you've run is successful but the game's Three Stooges physics engine definitely doesn't agree with that assessment but does its best to make it work anyway. My quarterback wobbles around with his arm cocked while four guys piledrive him into the center of the earth. The ball spirals to the receiver who ran maybe a one-yard slant and now stands motionless with his arms held straight out waiting for the pass, which is the correct way to catch footballs.
