Q: How long will raw meat stay good in my freezer?
A: We generally recommend using frozen items within a year. However, as long as they were properly handled prior to freezing and they did not thaw and refreeze (for example if there was a power outage) from a food safety perspective they will be safe beyond that time for any number of years. The issue is really one of quality after a year. The meat will most likely have freezer burn, it may have absorbed off odors and in general will not be very tasty. If someone has frozen meat past that one-year mark (by several months let’s say) they could use it in soup or a casserole where it will be combined with other foods for flavor.
