Q: What’s the best way to store a loaf of packaged bread to extend its life?
A: Bread will generally be good at room temperature for 14-18 days. During warmer and more humid months you may start to see spoilage (mold) more quickly. You can store bread in the refrigerator, but you will want to use in about 2-3 week. It can be frozen for 3-5 months, but be sure to freeze in a freezer bag and not just in the wrapping you purchase it in. Storing in these conditions will decrease the quality and over time the bread will dry out. If you are planning to use as an ingredient in a dish then quality may not be an issue, but the bread may not be acceptable for making sandwiches. Stale or dried out bread can be made into croutons.

Q: How long do eggs keep in my refrigerator?
A: Shell eggs will be good 4-6 weeks past the sell by date on the carton. When you bring them home keep in the original carton and store in the refrigerator and not in the door. There will be loss of quality over time if you crack the egg the yolk will not be as firm and the white will be runnier but since eggs are mainly used as an ingredient in a product this is not an issue. If you don’t think you can use them in time, they can be frozen, not as shell eggs but as the yolk and white mixed or separately. Store in freezer containers or bags and label appropriately. Use up frozen within about 6 months for quality
