Mandan Park in South Omaha experienced huge declines, gunfire, poaching, drug dealing, prostitution and dumping. These were issues that prompted Jacky and Steve to look for solutions and help. Jacky couldn’t find any help until she talked to Keep Omaha Beautiful and adopted the park and KOB Friends of Mandan Park was formed. In 2019 we adopted both parks and Mount Vernon Gardens was added to our name. We removed about 20 tons of material and several hundred tires. In 2018 we started attending OPD precinct meetings and had members join the Omaha Citizen Patrol.
Many fantastic volunteers and groups helped us, including volunteers from Our City Church, SAC Air Force Base, Bellevue West, Creighton and Iowa State. All efforts were focused on restoring these historic parks and maintaining the historic Gifford Park Drive. The Gifford Park Drive was one of the central issues for park security, and our group even repaired potholes. We continue to advocate for the preservation of this green space and its historic roadway.
We are registered on the City of Omaha lookup site. Click link below and type "Friends" and our group and boundary should come up.
