YOKAI VILLAGE
Yōkai (妖怪) are supernatural beings, spirits, and monsters from Japanese folklore. Their name roughly means “strange apparition” or “mysterious creature.” Yōkai range from terrifying demons to playful tricksters and even helpful spirits. Some live in forests, rivers, mountains, or old houses, while others wander the night streets, stirring up trouble or teaching humans lessons.
The Yokai Village is a place where the spirited and often trickster creatures from Japanesee folklore live. Under the Tanuki Temple, you can find a variety of attractions and shopping under the canopy of lush trees.
Unlike purely evil monsters, yōkai often have personalities, whether it be curious, mischievous, proud, lonely, or protective. Many folklore stories show them playing tricks on people, testing human behavior, or punishing greed and arrogance, but they can also reward kindness and respect. In land, you can encounter four of them:
Tanuki are famous tricksters known for their shapeshifting abilities and playful deception. They love disguising themselves as humans, monks, merchants, or even teapots just to confuse people or get free food and drinks (in some stories, they use their giant balls as a tool for shapeshifting, but with Universal mandate the land will continue to be family friendly) Tanukis are symbols of luck, prosperity, and cleverness. Think of them as prank-loving party animals who can’t resist a good joke!
Kappa are water-dwelling yokai that live in rivers, lakes, and ponds. They resemble a mix between a turtle, frog, and small human, with a dish of water on top of their head that gives them their power. Kappa are mischievous and sometimes dangerous, as they enjoy pulling people into water, stealing cucumbers, or making embarrassing jokes.
Tengu are powerful, long-nosed (or beaked) mountain spirits often associated with forests, warriors, and martial arts. They are proud, clever, and love to test humans, especially arrogant monks or boastful warriors. While tengu can be fierce, they are also notorious pranksters who use illusions, misdirection, and sudden gusts of wind to confuse travelers.
Kitsune are magical foxes with intelligence, longevity, and the ability to shapeshift — most famously into beautiful humans. The more tails a kitsune has, the older and wiser it is. Kitsune are playful and clever creatures who enjoy outwitting humans, stealing small items, or creating illusions. Many kitsune protect families, reward kindness, and serve as messengers of the rice deity Inari.
The Kitsune, dude to their rare and magical appearance, are found farther apart from the other creatures in the Kitsune Grotto.
The Yokai Trials is a Vekoma Madhouse attraction featuring three different immersive ride experiences inspired by legendary Japanese creatures. Each experience uses illusion, motion, sound, and lighting to place guests inside a supernatural encounter where reality twists and the"yokai spirit world" awakens! To absolve for capacity, the three experiences are found in three different showrooms- guests can choose the creature they want to encounter.
Guests enter a storm-wracked mountain shrine, where a proud tengu tests their courage. The room spins as powerful winds howl, trees bend, and the tengu’s laughter echoes. The experiene creates the sensation of being tossed through the skies in a whirlwind of illusions and motion. While this version is not as "epic" as the other two, the wind and surround sound effects make it the most thrilling.
Inside a glowing lantern-lit room, a playful nine-tailed kitsune begins a magical game of illusion. Walls melt into abstract shapes, characters shapeshift, and reality literally bends as guests are caught in a dazzling, mischievous fox-spirit illusion show. The eperience prioritizes light and sound in its experience
Guests witness the death and rebirth of the Japanese phoenix in a temple consumed by fire. As flames rise, the room tilts and spins, which ends in a breathtaking transformation as the phoenix soars from the ashes. Due to the live fire effects, this experience is the most highly sought after among fans.
