The Folger Education Department has several programs that reach out to DC Public Schools. However only one of them, Shakespeare Steps Out (SSO), involves the help of Folger Docents from beginning to end.
SSO is a series of ten 90-minute visits to selected DC public school classrooms to introduce students in grades 3-6 to the work of William Shakespeare.
Visits usually begin in the fall (October or November) and continue every 3-4 weeks during the school year.
Generally 8-10 classrooms participate in the SSO program each year. Docents may choose to help in one or more classrooms.
How do I get involved?
Docents who participate in the program will receive training before the first visit, assist the Folger Teaching Artist in the classroom, and assist during a class field trip to the Folger.
Docent assignments to classrooms are based on the Docent’s availability on certain days and ability to commute to the school. Schools might be in any DC ward.
