In honor of Wenceslao González Manteiga
Welcome to the Workshop on Functional, Nonparametric and Spatio-Temporal Statistics!
Organized by the Working groups in Functional Data Analysis, Nonparametric Statistics and Spatio-Temporal Statistics of SEIO, this workshop features both invited and contributed talks, as well as a special contributed poster sesion in honour of Wenceslao González Manteiga. Join us for a dynamic workshop exploring cutting-edge ideas in modern statistics!
Honoring Wenceslao González Manteiga
Wenceslao González Manteiga is a leading figure in the development of modern statistical methodology in Spain. Over several decades, his work has had a decisive impact on nonparametric inference, functional data analysis, and spatio-temporal statistics, combining rigorous theoretical foundations with a strong orientation toward real-world applications in areas such as biomedicine, environmental sciences, energy, and industry. From his long-standing academic base at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, he has played a key role in shaping an internationally connected statistical community, particularly in Galicia.
His scientific leadership and influence have been widely recognized. Among other distinctions, he was named IMS Fellow in 2017; Fellow of the Galician Royal Academy of Sciences in 2018; received the SEIO-Fundación BBVA Award for Methodological Statistics and the SEIO Medal in 2020; was awarded the National Statistics Prize (Premio Nacional de Estadística) in 2021; and was elected Fellow of the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences in 2025. These honors reflect both the depth of his methodological contributions and his sustained commitment to the development of Statistics as a discipline.
This workshop is organized by the SEIO Working Groups on Functional Data Analysis, Nonparametric Statistics, and Spatio-Temporal Statistics, three communities with which Wenceslao González Manteiga has maintained a close and influential relationship throughout his career. His ideas, mentorship, and collaborative spirit have strongly shaped the evolution of these areas in Spain, making this event a natural setting to celebrate his 70th birthday together with colleagues, collaborators, and former students.
Special Poster Session in Honor of Wenceslao
As part of the workshop program, we are pleased to host a special session of contributed posters in honor of Wenceslao. This session celebrates Wenceslao’s scientific legacy and his many contributions to our community.
We warmly encourage submissions that
engage with themes, problems, or methods connected to Wenceslao’s work, or
include Wenceslao as a coauthor.
All posters in this session will be presented alongside the workshop’s invited and contributed talks, providing an opportunity for focused discussion and recognition of Wenceslao’s impact.
