Five Nights at Freddy's 1 (FNaF 1) is the first game in the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise, released in August 2014. It set the foundation for the series and introduced the core gameplay mechanics, characters, and atmosphere that made the game iconic.
In FNaF 1, the player assumes the role of Mike Schmidt, a night security guard working at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. The restaurant is a family-friendly venue with animatronic characters that entertain guests during the day but become dangerous at night due to their malfunctioning AI. The animatronics roam freely and mistake the player for an endoskeleton, attempting to stuff them into an animatronic suit, which results in a jump scare and a game over.
The game takes place in the security office, where the player must survive five nights (each lasting roughly 6-9 minutes in real-time) from 12 AM to 6 AM while keeping an eye on the animatronics using security cameras. The main challenge lies in managing limited resources:
Power: Each night, the player is given a limited amount of power that controls the security cameras, lights, and doors. If the power runs out, the player is left vulnerable to the animatronics.
Security Cameras: The player can view different rooms in the restaurant to monitor the animatronics’ movements. The cameras do not cover every area, leaving some blind spots.
Doors & Lights: The player can close the security doors or use lights to check the hallways for animatronics, but these actions consume power, requiring careful management to survive the night.
Freddy Fazbear: The main mascot of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. He becomes more active as the nights progress and is often the last animatronic to attack.
Bonnie the Bunny: Frequently active early in the game, Bonnie moves through the building and typically approaches the player from the left side.
Chica the Chicken: Like Bonnie, Chica roams the building but usually approaches from the right side.
Foxy the Pirate: Foxy is stationed in Pirate Cove and becomes more active if the player does not monitor his camera. He will run down the hallway to attack if left unchecked.
The objective of the game is to survive five nights by keeping the animatronics at bay using the cameras, doors, and lights, all while managing power consumption. If the player succeeds, a sixth night and a "custom night" are unlocked, allowing players to customize the difficulty of the animatronics.
Jump Scares: When an animatronic reaches the player, it results in a sudden, loud jump scare, which became one of the signature features of the series.
Atmosphere: The game builds tension with eerie sounds, limited visuals, and unpredictable animatronic behavior.
FNaF 1 is widely regarded as a pioneering horror game due to its minimalist design and intense atmosphere, leading to its rapid rise in popularity. It’s also the starting point of a much larger narrative involving haunted animatronics, missing children, and dark secrets about Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza.
