A: Come to our practices! To join the team, you MUST come to the Mandatory practices that start in August and fill out the required paperwork. The nonmandatory practices and Open Gyms offered over the summer and during the school year are a great opportunity to build relationships and improve your skills, but if you miss them, that does not keep you from being on the team.
A: On the PCMS Athletics website you will find what you need:
the Athletic Blue Card
the PCMS Athletic Form
a Sports Physical from your doctor (signature page is in the PCMS Athletic form)
A: On the PCMS Athletics website you will find the FMS Athletic Form for your doctor to sign at your annual sports physical. This MUST be turned in to the office for you to participate in ANY PCMS sport starting on the 1st day of school. YOU MAY NOT PARTICIPATE UNTIL THIS FORM IS TURNED IT. Sports Physicals are good for ONE CALENDAR YEAR at PCMS. Note: Summer Open Gyms and Nonmandatory practices do not require this form to be turned in yet.
A: For volleyball season, you will need:
athletic shoes - court shoes are best and grip better on the wood floor
knee pads* - black if possible
all black bikers/shorts/tights for game days - any brand
optional - arm sleeves for diving - check the football and basketball aisles at Dicks.
*kneepads can be found at Walmart, Dick's Sporting Goods, Big 5 Sporting Goods and online.
A: Arm sleeves look cool, yes, but they really do have a purpose. They aid in diving. Our athletes are taught to dive because the goal of volleyball is to not let the ball hit the floor. Arm sleeves allow the athlete's arms to slide along the floor when diving . Our uniforms this year are long-sleeve for this exact purpose. If you choose to buy arm sleeves for your athlete, do NOT get sleeves that have plastic or padding in them - just simple, lightweight fabric that goes from wrist to above the bicep. Any color or pattern will do.
*arm sleeves can be found at Dick's Sporting Goods, Big 5 Sporting Goods and online. You may need to look in the football department. ;-)
A: The athletic fee can be paid via the Parent Portal. The office will add this fee once your athlete begins playing a sport. If you have questions, contact the PCMS office at ext.1401.
This fee is to help pay for things like refs, transportation, equipment, etc.
A: Stud earrings are allowed to be worn during games. Same thing goes for nose piercings, etc.
A: Anything!! Throwing or setting a soccer ball or a basketball is a great way to build your core strength and finger strength. But if you want to practice passing, choose a volleyball. These are what we use at FES and PCMS:
The Tachikara SV-5WSC is what we use at FMS for practice and for play. This is the ONLY weight of volleyball we will use at the middle school.
The Molton Light Touch is what we use at the DCES 4th and 5th grade Skills Camp. This is great for a beginner with tender arms.
The Tachikara Volley Lite is another great choice for a beginner. A bit lighter than the middle school ball with a softer surface.
