Swedish cuisine, or Svenska köket, is characterized by its use of cultured dairy products, a variety of crisp and soft (often sugared) breads, seasonal berries and stone fruits, as well as beef, chicken, lamb, pork, eggs, and an abundance of seafood. Potatoes, often boiled, are a common side dish. Given Sweden's vast geographic span from north to south, regional variations in cuisine are notable.
In the far north, traditional dishes often feature meats such as reindeer and other game, reflecting the influence of Sami culture. In contrast, the southern regions place more emphasis on fresh vegetables. Many classic Swedish dishes are rooted in simple yet contrasting flavors, such as the iconic pairing of savory meatballs with rich brown cream sauce, balanced by the tart sweetness of lingonberry jam.
Sweden’s pastry tradition is equally rich, offering a delightful array of tortes, yeast buns, cookies, biscuits, and cakes—many of which are sweet and often enjoyed with a cup of coffee during fika, the beloved Swedish coffee break.
