As someone who loves to explore a new city with short, leisurely walks, my travels are always centered around finding the perfect spot to relax and soak in the local atmosphere. Whether it's enjoying a refreshing drink at a rooftop bar with stunning views or unwinding by the water, I make it a point to experience the unique charm of each destination. And, of course, indulging in local cuisine is always at the top of my list—there’s no better way to truly savor a place than through its flavors. Here, I’m sharing my favorite spots and tips to help you make the most of your layovers or extended stays!
If you’re looking for an authentic taste of Swedish cuisine, Nomad is an absolute must. This cozy spot serves up some of the best meatballs and cured salmon in Stockholm, offering a true flavor of the city. The quaint ambiance invites you to linger over a delicious meal, sip on fine wine, and enjoy great conversations. During the summer, the experience is elevated with live entertainment, as local bands perform in the charming courtyard. Whether you're dining solo or with colleagues, Nomad is the perfect place to unwind and indulge in classic Swedish fare.
When it comes to craft cocktails, Pharmarium is in a league of its own—and for good reason. Ranked as one of the best bars in the world, this spot delivers a cocktail experience that is truly unique and hard to match. What sets it apart is not only the creative concoctions but also the expertise of the bartenders. I highly recommend letting the incredibly knowledgeable team craft a drink based on your preferences—you won’t be disappointed. Every visit feels like a personalized adventure in mixology, and it's always a home run!
For a perfect blend of relaxing by the water and embracing Stockholm's inclusive spirit, Mälarpaviljongen is a must-visit. This floating restaurant and bar on Lake Mälaren offers stunning views, a tranquil atmosphere, and a welcoming space for everyone, including the LGBTQ+ community. Whether you're stopping by for lunch or enjoying a sunset drink, the lush greenery and beautiful water surroundings create a peaceful escape from the bustling city. The seasonal menu, filled with fresh, local ingredients, pairs perfectly with their selection of wines and cocktails. During the summer, Mälarpaviljongen transforms into a vibrant hub with live music and a lively, open-minded crowd, making it a true gem in Stockholm’s bar scene.
For a fun and social experience in Stockholm, I highly recommend Boulebar. It’s the perfect spot to gather with friends or colleagues, enjoy a drink, and have a meal while playing a game of pétanque (boules). Whether you’re new to the game or a seasoned player, it’s a great way to unwind and socialize. You can play indoors at the cozy Rådhuset location, or if you’re visiting in the warmer months, head to the Tanto location for an outdoor game in the park. With a relaxed atmosphere, delicious food, and a full bar, Boulebar offers a unique, laid-back activity that’s perfect for any day in Stockholm.
Stockholm offers a wide variety of shopping experiences, whether you’re after local treats, Swedish design, or great bargains. I love starting at Hemköp, one of the city’s top grocery stores, where I can spend hours stocking up on all my favorite childhood treats and pantry essentials. From Sweden’s famous pick-and-mix candy to specialty breads, spreads, and locally roasted coffee, it’s the perfect place to bring home a taste of Sweden.
For a more curated shopping experience, Åhléns City is a go-to destination for Swedish design and fashion. It’s the ideal place to browse through stylish home decor, clothing, and seasonal bargains that highlight the best of Scandinavian aesthetics.
If you’re on the hunt for discounts, don’t miss Stockholm Quality Outlet for a trip to the city’s outlet mall, where you can score some serious steals on top brands. I also make a point to stop by the local pharmacies, which carry high-quality skincare and health products that are often hard to find in the U.S.
And don’t forget—bring your passport to take advantage of tax-free shopping refunds before you head back home!
For me, a perfect day in Stockholm starts with indulging in a traditional Swedish breakfast at the hotel’s buffet. For a small charge, you get unlimited access to all kinds of delicious food and drinks—everything from fresh breads and cheeses to eggs and herring, alongside coffee that’s perfect for recharging. After that, it’s time for a well-deserved nap, usually 3 or 6 hours depending on how jetlagged I am!
Once I’m up and feeling refreshed, I head out to tackle my personal to-do list, which always includes a bit of shopping for some local treats and essentials. By the time I’ve ticked off my errands, I love to gather the rest of the crew for some downtime. Depending on the mood and who I’m flying with, we either hit a chic rooftop like Spesso or Urban Deli for drinks with a view, or head to Secret Garden, a great gay bar, for a more relaxed and fun vibe.
To wrap up the perfect day, it’s all about enjoying a delicious dinner before making sure I’m in bed by 10 pm, ready to rest up for the next adventure.
