Assignment 1: Field Observations
Black Smith Fork River, Hyrum UT
Date: January 12, 2024
Location: Black Smith Fork River
Accessed via Hyrum City Park
Observations:
The river is shallow, about a foot and a half at its deepest point. It's about 12-15 feet wide. The water is moving slowly and is clear, no suspended sediment can be seen in the water. This section of the river is surrounded by shrubs, some low trees as well as nearby large mature cottonwoods, indicating the presence of a floodplain. This stretch of the river is likely heavily shaded in the summer. Slightly upstream is a small dam-like rock structure that appears to be man-made and is less than a foot tall, it does not span all the way across the river. This section of the river contains some small pools and riffles. The slope increases downstream reflected by more turbulent quicker moving water. On the south side of the river is a trail and the north side is the Hyrum City Park.
