Native American Heritage Month
Native American Heritage Month
Native American Heritage Month was first officially recognized by the United States in 1990, over 70 years after the request was made. The US federal government acknowledges 684 Native American tribes and tribal nations.
Lenape people lived in the area that is now Philadelphia for over 6,000 years. In 1682, William Penn and Chief Tamanend established a Treaty of Friendship between Quaker settlers and Lenape. After Penn’s death, his sons did not uphold this original agreement, causing many Lenape to hide their identity or leave the area. Pennsylvania currently does not officially recognize any Native American tribes.
