Balloon rockets are a fun experiment that shows how air can propel objects forward.Β
The air trapped inside a blown up balloon is stored as potential energy. When that air is let out through a narrow opening, it pushes against the air outside, causing the balloon to fly. Connecting the balloon on the string track helps us see how far and fast it can go!
Use this kit as a starting point for learning about other toys that zoom, fly, float, and soar.
You will need two chairs. You may also want scissors and a timer.Β

Balloon Rockets
Tie a 10-12 foot length of string to a table leg, chair back, or book cart.
Push a straw through the end of the string.
Tie that end of the string to a chair or book cart.
Make sure the string is tight.
Blow up a balloon but donβt tie it off.
Put two pieces of tape around the straw and attach them to the round part of the balloon.
Let the air out of the balloon. Whoosh!
String a coffee filter above the mouth of the balloon and try it again. What changed?
