Small Plants, Big Impact
Small Plants, Big Impact
We grow plants in a variety of sizes, and increasingly are offering plants in gallon sizes. But when it comes to installing plantings, smaller sizes are our go-to. We're talking 3'' x 5'', 3'' x 3'', and even 2.5'' plug sizes, usually plants in their first year of life. The reason for this is simple: smaller plants are the most economical way to create a densly planted garden. Densly planted gardens mimic the way plants normally grow in community with each other. This minimizies the need for mulch, reduces weed pressure, and increases the potentency of the planting's ability to support life at every level.
Smaller, younger plants: withstand transplant easier, reduce labor costs due to relative ease and speed of planting, and have more energy available to devote to root growth.
A tray of first year Monarda fistulosa seedlings potted in 2.5'' pots or deep 3'' six packs- Each are about 5 inches tall by the end of June
Monarda fistulosa started from seed in midsummer going into the ground in early fall
