Our goats have been raised (and in many cases, breed) to be on pasture eating what is natural to them.
This may sound obvious, but animals can pretty quickly get conditioned to only eat the food that humans supply. We rescued one goat that we thought would not make it. She had NO natural instinct left for grazing or browsing. She was very overweight and all she had ever had exposure to was grains and treats.
Our goats are on moving pasture year-round and except in unusual circumstances, have to eat based on what the season and location provides. This is what goats do naturally, but not the way all domestic goats act.
We visited a goat dairy farm early on and the goats were not even fully fenced in... They seemed to loose all instinct to graze and forage for food. Our goats are incredible at what they do. We generally have the herd divided into two groups and most commonly take the same two groups through one area, one following the other. We believe our goats are the most efficient at vegetation removal that you will find anywhere.
We also work with the goats - pruning higher branches, removing trash and foreign objects and, where specified, removing the very few weed types that the goats don't eat.
