  • Look for smaller pieces and use basic/standard shapes to build your designs.
  • Sketchnotes have multiple purposes--use goes beyond documenting content.
  • Sketchnotes instead of a test for students to show what they know.
  • Sketchnotes as a "word bank"/"cheat sheet" for assessment (are we testing memory or understanding of concepts. Sketchnotes eliminate memory/recall issue as point of access obstacle to demonstration of learning.

Session: Empathy & Activism


  • Ashoka.org as a resource for funding for social entrepreneurs; quite a few are on empathy
  • Building SEL skills are key as is the opportunity for students to exercise their voice and serve as activists and agents for change.
  • Our Global Classroom https://ourglobalclassroom.com/ (@browynjoyce) is a great tool for global connection to empathy
  • SGDs are helpful for guiding conversations related to activism and development of SEL skills such as empathy.
  • Connecting students in different countries helps to expose students to new experiences and cultural values/belief/practices outside of what might be familiar to them in their "world".
  • Skype is a way to expand walls of classroom to reach classrooms around the world.
  • Flipgrid can be used as a student run initiative to build communication, collaboration, SEL skills, vocational skills which are invaluable to life skill development and leading a mindful, purposeful and fulfilling life.
  • National Geographic Educator: Geo inquiry process (free resource)
  • Beluga platform (free) helps students to learn cultures from around the world, collaborate globally, earn points which are donated to have an impact to a cause of their choice.
  • Empatico- will match you to other classrooms around the world (sponsored by the Kind foundation)
  • Global Glimpse program - underprivileged students travel abroad in summer, work in a local community, return empowered having had this experience.
