Implementation

We strive to provide innovative solutions to the complexities of high-quality flexible learning. Our team believes that pedagogically mapping quality standards alongside active learning and being clear about the amount of time we expect students to spend on different activities is one way to achieve this goal.

We have developed a comprehensive pedagogical planner that recommends three principles to improve modular design. Firstly, we suggest sourcing student and expert views of the program to identify areas that need improvement. Teaching and learning data, along with expert views and observations, can provide valuable evidence. By asking questions like "What happened here?", "What does that mean?" and "Why did that happen?", we can model a module's 'health' using a Red-Amber-Green (RAG) status.

Secondly, we propose using evidence to inform module design changes. To help you make smart interventions, we have produced a research evidence base to sit alongside MAPIT. This provides an indication of 'what worked' in a particular setting, allowing you to combine knowledge of your context with examples of success and make Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound (SMART) interventions.

Lastly, our MAPIT planner divides students' module activity into categories represented as individual lines, similar to an underground map. This allows you to chart a student's holistic journey through a module, identifying areas of tension or overload where changes may be needed. We encourage you to create balance between different lines and consider the overall ratio of staff contact to peer learning and independent study time. By prioritising this balance, you can create an optimal learning experience for your students.
