Volunteer signups will open in April 2026.
Thank you for considering volunteering at Flat Rock Trail Race! We truly appreciate our volunteers and their support of our participants! This page is intended to give more information about volunteering and hopefully answers many of your questions. If not, please email the RD Rob Fiero at flatrocktrailrace@gmail.com!
Thank you for signing up and helping us raise money for the Humane Society for Greater Nashua!

This is the parking for the Mill Street Aid Station.
When should I arrive?
Please plan on arriving 10 or 15 minutes before your shift so that you can get parked, find your spot, and have the current volunteers bring you up to speed.
Where should I park?
Parking information is at the top of the page with pictures!
What should I wear and what will the weather be like?
We are hoping for a wonderful summer day! Fingers crossed!
Please dress for the weather. We will have tents for bib handout, timing, aid station volunteers, so if it does rain, you'll be out of the worst of it. For those trail marking, course checking, parking, or doing setup/cleanup, we will be out in the elements. Please plan appropriately! You're welcome to bring a bag with extra clothing to keep with you at the aid station.
You will be outside and may be working in a field or near grass, so closed toed shoes are a good idea. We will have sun, tick and bug spray available, but definitely bring your own if you prefer!
What else should I bring?
Volunteers are welcome to snack on anything we have at the aid stations! Please bring a cup though as we are a cupless race. If you are doing more than one shift, have special food requirements, or want something more substantial, do bring a cooler with your own food/sandwiches/snacks/beverages.
Trail Marking
Trail marking will involve mostly walking the 5 mile route, so again dress for the weather and bring hydration. I'm guessing this will be two to three hours where we will be carrying signs and ribbons to place along the course. We will also be stopping to decide how best to mark the trail for the runners, so we won't be flying through the miles.
Parking
Please arrive closer to 6am on Saturday June 21st so we can be organized before the runners arrive. You'll be directing runners and volunteers on where to park. The parking area is pretty intuitive, but if we end up with a lot of runners we may have to be more creative.
The position is from 6am to 9:30, which is after race start. The thought here is someone not participating in the race can help us set up the aid station. However, if you're running the race and want to help with parking, we can make something work! Just reach out to Rob and we'll get you taken care of.
Bib Handout
Please arrive no later than 6:20am for your shift so we can be organized before the runners arrive.
It is very important to get the right bib to the right person, so please double check that you have the right bib for the right person! Mistakes can happen, but it is helpful to take that extra few seconds per bib to verify the correct owner rather than the RD having to figure out why the results aren't correct. 😞
When you volunteer for bib pickup, you'll be seated at a table doing the following:
Asking the runner their name
Looking up the runner name from a list to find their bib number
Getting the bib with that number from a stack of bibs
Double check the bib number matches the bib number on the sheet (this is really important!)
Handing out the bib to that runner
This tends to be a pretty fast paced job at some points, but a lot of fun!
The position is from 6:30am to 10:00, which is after race start. However, if you're running the race and want to help with bib handout, we can make something work! Just reach out to Rob and we'll get you taken care of.
Course Check
The course check crew gets to run the course before race start to make sure that the markers are still there and make sense! Want to get a run in early and then be done for the day? This is perfect for you! The plan is to have extra ribbons and a few trail signs for you to take in case some have been removed or more marking is needed, so bring a backpack or other carrying device.
Main Aid Station
The main aid station will be right near the parking lot and entrance to the trail, which is also the start/finish for the races. This aid station will have Tailwind, water, soda, various snacks and treats, ice, and other support for the runners. Volunteers will greet the runners and make sure they have what they need to continue their race, offer to fill their hydration bottles, and be the eyes and ears in case anyone comes in injured or maybe shouldn't go back out for any reason.
You'll be keeping water jugs for the runners filled and maybe iced, mixing Tailwind, keeping snacks stocked on the table, possibly peeling or cutting up fruit like oranges, bananas and watermelon. These sugary items sometimes attract bees, so please plan appropriately. We plan to make PB&J sandwhiches ahead of time, but if we run low we could be making more on site. We do not plan on having hot food.
A porta-potty is available near this aid station, and there is good Verizon cell service.
Mill Street Aid Station
The Mill Street aid station is about a 10 minute drive from the main aid station and will have parking practically next to the tent. This aid station will have Tailwind, water, soda, and ice for the runners. Volunteers will greet the runners, offer to fill their hydration bottles, and be the eyes and ears in case anyone comes in injured or maybe shouldn't go back out for any reason.
You'll be keeping water jugs for the runners filled and maybe iced, and mixing Tailwind.
A porta potty is available at this aid station. This area is out in the open, and while there will be a tent you may want to bring suntan lotion.
The downside of this location is that Verizon (at least) has zero cell service. Please be prepared to drive to get supplies, although we will have someone periodically stop by. If someone is injured there may not be cell service to call for help.
Timing
The timing station will have an iPad running the Ultrasignup tool to time runners as they come through the the start/finish. You'll need basic comfort with using the software, need to mark runners as done a loop, or done. This will be in conjunction with a second person who will be calling out bib numbers and making sure each participant is accounted for.
Course Sweep
The sweepers will be taking down all the trail markings, checking the trail for any trash, and making sure nobody is left out on the course. Be prepared to walk or run the course and collect signage.
