(May the 4th be with you!)
Hello and Happy May!
It's hard to believe that the inaugural Flat Rock Trail Race is in six weeks! June 21st will be here before any of us know it!
First off, I want to give you all a huge THANK YOU for signing up! I realize that inaugural events can be questionable, and your trust in our race is something I take seriously. We plan to have a fun event that you all enjoy.
Secondly, all proceeds will go to the Humane Society for Greater Nashua and their building expansion. (More on that below) My family both growing up and as an adult have had a dog and five cats adopted from the Humane Society. My wife and I have been volunteering at Humane Society events since 2006, and when an opportunity to contribute to this latest effort presented itself I knew I wanted to share my love of animals with my love of trails. I’m beyond delighted to share that with all of you and look forward to seeing you on June 21st!
Some costs for the race will be paid by the Humane Society, including insurance and porta potties. To keep their costs down and maximize our donation, I plan to donate the remaining items, including signage, Tailwind, bibs, and aid station offerings. Flat Rock currently has 22 entrants, and I hope that will continue to grow before registration ends on June 18th. Do you have a friend who might enjoy some time on trails or want to support the Humane Society? Please invite them to register and join us! Please make me go buy more Tailwind and food!!
Let’s see – what else? There will be a course preview run on May 17th, and all the details are on our Facebook event. If you haven’t been on the course, it is a mix of everything from flat runnable rail trail to a few steep ascents and descents. Each loop is approximately 5 miles, has about 600 feet of elevation and you’ve got 6 hours to run the loop as much as you want!
We plan to have a memento for all runners and prizes for first place men, women and non-binary categories. What is first place? Going the greatest distance in that 6-hour time limit!
This race couldn’t happen without the support of the Dunstable Conservation Commission, The Dunstable Rural Land Trust, and the local community. If you’d like to donate to the DCC or the DRLT to support their conservation efforts, please visit their web sites above where you’ll find QR codes to make donations right from their sites. In addition, the Tyngsborogh-Dunstable Historical Society will be holding their Annual Strawberry Festival in town the same day as the race. I’m working on getting more info on that – stay tuned! They’d love to see a few runners drop in after the race. I know I hope to get a strawberry shortcake and some ice cream that day!
I’ll send another email about a week before the race with more details, but please check out our web site in the meantime and if you have any questions drop me an email or post in our Facebook group. Volunteer signups should be out soon, and a link will be added to the web site and posted to Facebook.
Happy trails and see you June 21st!
