The Flathead High School cheerleaders performed their halftime show on Thursday, Jan. 23 and Friday, Jan. 24 during both halftimes of the boys and girls crosstown games at the FHS gym.
Both Junior Varsity and Varsity cheerleaders worked together and practiced their performance a month ahead of time, working with stunts and dances.
The cheerleaders opened with a dance, followed by their stunts. Their first stunt included five halves, where two people known as the bases, are carrying the person up in the stunt, also known as the flyer. Both bases face each other carrying a foot of the flyer up to their chest. The bases in the halves then throw the flyers feet up as the flyer falls forward and catches them on their stomachs. After catching them they pop and turn the flyer onto their back and dip them backwards as the flyers kicked their legs up.
“Our first stunt was really fun and was probably one of my favorites because we were able to fit in every single cheerleader into this sequence,” junior Makayla Mcpherson said. “I feel like everyone being included in this stunt created a good look for our team.”The cheerleaders then moved to their next two stunts which are called mini pyramids. They both each set up two halves, with a flyer supporting the main flyer in a stunt group in front of them by holding her wrists. The bases in the front stunt group tossed the main flyer into the air as she smacks her legs together and lands in her bases arms. The main flyer then walked away from the stunt and ran back, doing a round off, hopping into her base groups as they caught her on her back while absorbing, and then tossed her back out. Extra help came in from another cheerleader which supported the cheerleaders leg as they tossed her into a handstand which was carried like a half. The bases popped the main flyer out of their hands as she fell and flipped over to her back, catching her on her back. “There is nothing I wish we had done differently,” senior Collin Dallen said. “All of our practices paid off and helped us make great progress. Throughout this time, we were able to build trust in each other's abilities within stunting.” The cheerleaders included 3 dances in their performance, two of which were put together by two varsity cheerleaders, seniors Krystal Gilliam and Calista Fahrney. “Both Calista and I each put together dances we were able to put in the halftime,” said Senior Krystal Gilliam. “I really love dancing, so I’m very glad I was given this opportunity during my last season of cheering.”
The performance ended with their biggest stunt which is called the big pyramid. It involved three halves lined up with the main flyer’s stunts in two separate stunts in between the halves. The halves flyers held on to the main flyers arms as they get thrown into the air and do a backwards flip. The main bases threw their flyer up, catching them in a lib extension. A lib extension is where the bases hold up only one foot of the flyer with their arms fully extended out, carrying them as high as they can.
“The big stunt was definitely one of my favorites and I had a lot of fun flying in it,” said sophomore Rylee Bernier. “My stunt group put in a lot of work and with that, we were able to have such a great outcome.”
The dances were a big part of the halftime and were some of the cheerleaders favorite parts of the halftime.
“The dances and stunting in this performance were so fun to do with the JV,” said sophomore Kailey Stevens. “I feel like it brought us together as a team.”
With over a months work of practice, their hard work and dedication definitely showed in their performance.
“I’m so proud of our team, everyone put in all that they had into this show,” said Coach Twichel. “We love using this time to show everyone all the things we are capable of doing and what we have been working on during this season.”

Senior Brendan Barnes, sophomore Fin Nadeau and freshman Cade Troupe never lost at the Western AA Divisional tournament while earning individual championships at Helena High to lead 19 total wrestlers in qualifying on Saturday, Feb. 8, for the state tournament.
The state tournament is in Billings, starting Friday, Feb. 14.
Flathead tied with Billings Senior, Bozeman (last year’s champion) and Butte by taking 19 wrestlers to state.
“I felt very confident after winning my matches,” Barnes said. “I won them by wrestling smart and aggressive. I teched my first kid, then won 7-4 then 7-2. Plans on going into state are to wrestle hard every match and see where it takes me.”
Senior Paxton Boyce, Tanner Russell and sophomore Asher Kemppainen all lost their championship matches by decision and ended up with second place.
“I took second at divisionals and I feel good about how I did and it will set me up well,” said Boyce. “For state, I plan on winning it. That's been my goal all year and I have been spending more time on technique and staying in shape to reach my goal of winning state.”
Strong freshmen are helping a lot this season. Flathead lost a few senior state placers from last year, but replaced them with five new freshmen that are going to state and all plan on placing.
Five Flathead wrestlers placed third at divisionals. At least one in each grade. Freshman Cade Gardner and Noah Poe-Hatten, Sophomore Chase Youso, Junior Zaybin Stewart and Senior Garret Rieke all won their final matches to place third.
“It feels really good to go to state as a sophomore,” said Youso. “I placed third at divisionals and my main goal for the season was to place at state and I did accomplish this goal by placing fifth.”

Senior shooting guard Jenna Johnson made four 3-pointers and scored 17 points, but it wasn’t enough as Flathead High School girls basketball team lost to Great Falls, 56-45, on Friday, Dec. 13, in Great Falls.
It was the first game of the season for the Bravettes, which puts them at 0-1 on the season.
Great Falls held a lead at halftime, 26-23. Flathead only scored eight in the third quarter and the Bison took at 40-31 lead into the fourth quarter. The Bravettes made 50 percent of their 2-point shots, but committed 24 turnovers.

Junior post Bridget Crowley had a team-high five rebounds to go with two points. Junior post Rebecca Eacker had five points and two steals.
The Bravettes had a better first half than second.
“After halftime, I feel like we came out having a negative mindset that let us to believe that we were already going to lose,” Kanter said. “With about two minutes left in the game, that’s when we decided to get rid of the negative mindset and go out and work.”
The Bravettes made 55 percent from the free throw line, which helped them stay in the game. Converse made 4 of 4 free throws, followed by Kanter and Johnson each making 1 of 2.

Flathead High School juniors Gabe Adams and Hunter Hickey tied for a team high of 10 points each, but the combined effort didn’t mold into a win, in a 67-47 loss to Bozeman highschool, on Saturday, Dec 21 at Bozeman High gym.
The loss brought the Braves to 0-3 on the season. The Hawks advanced to 2-2 on the season.
After Halftime the braves were able to slow the hawks scoring in the third quarter, but the deficit was just too much to battle back from.
“I think we just didn't have the right attitude coming into this game, and our performance was the example of that”. Said Adams
Despite the score the braves had bested the hawks in terms of 2 point field goal percentage, having made 52 percent while Bozeman had 45.8 percent.
What really told the game was the turnover battle. Flathead having committed 20 turnovers, Bozeman scoring 19 of their points off of those turnovers, compared to the Hawks 7. As well as steals, the Hawks had gotten themselves a total of 9.
“I think why turnovers were such a problem for us was because bozeman had so much momentum going for them that we just kept making mistakes.” Said senior forward Tannen Beyl
Junior Forward/Guard Hunter Hickey aided the team with 8 rebounds to help win the battle of the boards 33-32.

Flathead High School girls soccer team junior Skyleigh Thompson scored 24 goals and had 11 assists to lead the state in scoring by a huge margin, but the Bravettes lost to Helena, 5-0, on Oct. 22 in the playoffs and didn’t advance to the state tournament.
The Bravettes finished the season with a 6-6-2 record and placed sixth in the Western AA.
Thompson outscored the second-best player in the state by a whopping 25 points; she was seven goals short of the all-time state record set in 2007. The Montana Grizzlies women’s soccer team has already recruited her.
One of the highlights of the season was snapping Glacier’s six-game winning steak on Thursday, Sept. 26, at Legends Stadium. Tied 1-1, Thompson scored the game-winning goal nine minutes into the second half and the team’s defense stiffened up for the final 31 minutes of the game to hold up a 2-1 victory. At the time, it improved the Bravettes record to 6-3-1 in Western AA play.
On that game-winning goal, Thompson got a pass from sophomore Ellie Hawes and shot from about 15 yards out.
“A ball was played in the air around the top of the box, 18 yards out,” Thompson said. “I took a touch around one of the defenders and chipped it over the goal keeper as she was coming out of the goal.”
Goal keeper Sara Harrison had nine saves and Hawes assisted both goals. Kami Darrow tied the game in the 16th minute, just two minutes after Glacier scored the game’s first goal.
“My most favorite part about this season was the second crosstown game after beating Glacier when they had been undefeated before us,” Thompson said. “Our team ended up in a huge dog pile and it was so fun. The biggest goal I accomplished this year was being number one in the state for goals and assists.”

Senior Jalen Hawes scored 16 goals and had 11 assists to help lead the Flathead High School boys soccer team in 2019, but the Braves lost to Glacier, 2-1, on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at Legends Stadium and didn’t advance to the state tournament.
It was a heartbreaking playoff loss, as Flathead took a 1-0 lead into halftime and Glacier scored the game-winning goal with less than two minutes left in the game.
Flathead finished the season with a 7-6-1 record and placed fourth in the Western AA standings. Glacier was fifth. The Braves swept the Wolfpack, 5-2 and 1-0, during the regular season.
Hawes was third in the state with 43 points (two points for each goal scored and one point for each assist). He was just two points behind the state leader, Marcus Anderson of Missoula Hellgate.
Hawes was proud of his personal stat line but said it wasn't what was most important. “It felt great but the team was the number one priority,'' Hawes said.
This was a bright spot for the senior but there was also a tough ending to the season.
“After Glacier scored we had a chance to score but the ref ended the game of a goal scoring opportunity” “So it put a pretty bad taste in our mouths,” Hawes said.
Senior AJ Apple was eighth in the state in scoring with 32 points, off of 14 goals and four assists. Senior Eric Gardner placed 11th in state scoring with 24 points, off of 10 goals and four assists.
Apple said, “I felt pretty good, there was a lot of other people who could’ve been in my position but knowing that was me, I felt accomplished.”
Apple was a bit more disappointed when reacting to the loss to Glacier, “Obviously it was the last game for all of the seniors and were all emotional about it and we had some words to say to the refs after the game about some certain things.”
However, he said this about the overall feeling of the season,“We did pretty well and we had a pretty good team, that is the closest team we’ve ever had family wise, we had the most seniors so we could relate to each other more than any other team could.”
Besides the first two games of the season, when the Braves beat Butte, 10-1, to start the season and then beat Glacier, 5-2, the Braves never had a losing or winning streak. They alternated wins and losses and a tie for the entire season.
Ukranian foreign exchange student Arsen Sokolov was fourth on the team with four goals and two assists. Junior Timothy Weymouth was fifth with two goals.

Flathead High School senior Tanner Russell ran for 94 yards and one touchdown in the first round of the Montana Class AA playoffs against the Billings West Golden Bears, but the effort wasn’t enough in a 51-22 loss on Friday, Nov. 1, at Daylis Stadium.
The final score wasn’t indicative of how close it actually was through almost three quarters. The Braves trailed only 23-15, with four minutes left in the third quarter. Then the Golden Bears scored on four big plays on offense the rest of the way.
The loss capped off the No. 14 Braves’ season with a 2-8 record. No. 3 Billings West improved to 9-1 on the season.
The Braves rushed for a total of 180 yards on 40 carries. Senior quarterback Cooper Smith added 54 yards on 15 rushes and senior Chance Sheldon-Allen had 26 yards on five attempts. West finished with 141 yards, 128 by senior running back Demarcus Carr.
In terms of passing, West out-threw the Braves by almost 250 yards with Billings senior Josh Erbacher completing 18 of 24 passes for 334 yards and five touchdowns. The Braves completed a total of five out of nine passes for 85 yards and 2 touchdowns.
One of those touchdowns came from a throw from wide receiver Sheldon-Allen on a trick play to junior wideout Nick Gustafson for a 33 yard touchdown.

Flathead High School senior running back Tanner Russell dominated in the ground game, running for 170 yards to help lead the Braves football team to a 19-7 win against the Missoula Big Sky Eagles on Friday, Oct. 25, at Legends Stadium.
The Braves climbed to 2-7 on the season and 2-6 in Western AA conference play.
Big Sky dropped to 1-8 on the season and 0-8 in Western AA Conference play.
Big Sky lost the turnover battle, 4-1. The Eagles lost two fumbles and threw two interceptions while Flathead threw one interception.
Tied 0-0 in the second quarter, the Braves took a 6-0 lead into halftime on the strength of two field goals by Eric Gardner. Russell scored a touchdown in the third quarter to put the Braves ahead, 12-0, and they never looked back.
The Braves rushed for a total of 300 yards on almost 60 carries. Senior quarterback Cooper Smith added 106 yards rushing to Russell’s attack.
“I think the main reason why we succeeded in the run game was because our o-line really Stepped up And really got after their defense”. said Smith.
Ahead 12-7 in the fourth quarter, the Braves put the game out of reach when senior Travis McCully blocked a punt and senior Tannen Beyl recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown to put the game at its final score.
“I saw the punt get blocked and I thought oh my gosh I'm gonna get my first touchdown and so I dove on it and scored”. Said Beyl
Flathead defensive backs helped controlled the game by limiting two Big Sky quarterbacks in completing just 29 percent of 27 passes. Senior Chance Sheldon-Allen tacked on his second interception of the season, and senior Sutton Keeler received his first interception on the year.

The Flathead High School football team was held to only 37 yards of offense in a 42-0 loss against the Glacier Wolfpack on Friday, Oct. 18, at Legends Stadium.
The Braves fell to 1-7 on the year and 1-6 in Western AA conference play.
Glacier evened out to 4-4 on the season and 3-3 against the Western AA conference.
It was the first shutout in the 13-year-old crosstown rivalry. Players said the loss was demoralizing.
The Braves offense couldn’t advance on the Wolfpack, accounting for only five first downs and 10 punts. The Braves totalled -8 yards rushing on 32 attempts.
“I think we couldn’t establish a run game because we had way too many mental mistakes and missed assignments”. Said senior Chance Sheldon-Allen.
And two Braves quarterbacks completed only three of 14 passes.
“I think it was hard to throw the ball because we would always get into 3rd and long situations and we wouldn't have the time in the backfield to get the ball out”. Said junior quarterback Charlie Hinchey .
Ironically, as lopsided as the score was, the teams each had two turnovers and Glacier compiled only 314 total yards on offense.
On defense, senior defensive tackle Max Anderson led the team with nine tackles. Senior defensive end Tanner Russell and sophomore defensive tackle Kayden Berkey each had eight tackles. Senior punter Travis McCully averaged 31.3 yards per his 10 punts.

Flathead High School junior Marcella Mercer and sophomore Jillian Wynne triumphed in golf during their Crosstown Cup individual matches, but the team lost to Glacier, 27-9, on Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 25 and 26, at Village Greens Golf Course.
Both the boys and girls teams combined to determine the overall points. Glacier celebrated its fifth consecutive year of winning the cup, which was moved ahead one day because of bad weather.
The first day of the competition had Glacier and Flathead golfers partnering head-to-head in informal four-ball matches. Mercer and Wynne won their partner match after the seventh hole. They won four holes and tied their Glacier opponents on three holes while losing none.
It was a lighthearted, encouraging experience, despite the competitive nature of the tournament between rivals.
“It’s a good friendly day out on the course,” Mercer said.
On Thursday, the second day, each golfer competed individually in a two-person match. Wynne won against Glacier senior Abi Manger. Mercer, who won by forfeit, and Wynne were responsible for all nine of Flathead’s points.
“Our top two girls swept all their available points, and our top four boys all played highly competitive pairs and singles matches,” first-year head coach Roy Antley said.
Coach Antley explained how the final score did not show the close competition. Junior Ezra Epperly, paired against Glacier freshman Tyler Avery, played his singles match through the last hole. Avery eventually placed third at state.
“I was proud of the way our kids fought to the end and pushed their opponents hard, regardless of the final outcome of the match,” Antley said.
