I use a regular inkjet printer to print all my puppets. We printed our little ducks onto matte photo paper, but you could also use light cardstock, or regular printer paper and laminate the puppets after you have cut them out.

While the other mummy and I were busy cutting out ducks, the four year olds used excellent maths skills sorting and counting to make sure everyone had the right number of ducks. The Five Little Ducks song counts down from five to zero (no ducks) as the little ducks go far away. Practice counting and number words, and talk about how many little ducks there were when no ducks came back.

We practiced our plurals with this fun puzzle. After practicing the plural pairs on one side (such as duck and ducks, or turtle and turtles), turn the cards over to see if you can complete the picture puzzle. There is a black-and-white version which makes for a great puzzle support mat if your little ones need a little extra help.

As I mentioned above, there are many ways that your students can practice number sense with activities inspired by the five little ducks. Students can practice number recognition, one-to-one correspondence, and number formation with this one easy-to-use activity.

Just like the duck counting above, students have a mission to accomplish with this activity. They need to get the five little ducks back together! They will do this by counting on to five. Each line of the worksheet has a number of ducks and the rest of the line is blank. Students will add duck counters to help them count on from that number until they get to five. They are always so excited to see each line fill back up with ducks!

This activity also lays the foundation for future practice with decomposing numbers. With the clear distinction between printed ducks and paper ducks, students can clearly see that the total number of five can be created with different number combinations.

There is room on each page for students to identify and trace a number between one and five. They will also glue the correct number of ducks to the barn on each page. Your students will be so excited to take reader home and share with their families!

The next option has a blank line in the sentence where the number should go. Students will count the ducks on each page, then write the corresponding number on the line. The final page also has space to cut and paste five ducks to go along with the final sentence. This is great practice for ordering numbers! (This final page is the same for all three book options.)

The girls all loved this story-telling activity as it combined two of their favourite things, singing and water play! This song is a great one for counting up and back down again from 1 to 5, subtracting one duck during each verse until there are none left. Using story and singing props is so helpful for little children as it allows a very tactile, kinaesthetic way to act out and physically move the objects while doing so.

In 2016, Denise Fleming wrote a picture book of the song that teaches children to count the ducks and the days of the week. She reworded most of the words in the poem and included funny illustrations that children can relate to.

It is only a fun song about five little ducks. The ducks not returning has no ulterior meaning but was a good tool to help children create a story in their minds and to visualize the counting from five to zero. We all learn better through stories!

Most of the songs sung the same way as five little ducks are derivatives of the song itself. The nursery rhyme Five Little birds comes to mind here. It has the same connotation as the Five Little Ducks Song, only that in this case, it is little birds leaving the nest to fly instead.
