How to get started fishing / ¿Cómo empezar a pescar?

If you are 16-69 years old, you need a fishing license and trout stamp to fish the Musconetcong. Licenses are good for one calendar year.
If you are under 16 or over 70, you don’t need a license. Anyone can fish without a license on two Free Fishing Days–usually in June and October.
Licenses and trout stamps are sold online, and at stores that sell fishing gear or bait. Your fees help pay for raising fish and fish conservation.
NJ Fish & Wildlife publishes the Freshwater Fishing Digest every year with regulations regarding when and where you can fish, size, and how many you can keep. Get your free copy wherever you buy your license, or online.

Fishing Digest

There are two popular methods of catching freshwater fish, including trout–spin casting and fly fishing. To use the spin casting method, you need a rod and reel with a hook, and use bait or lures to catch fish. This method is great for beginners because the equipment is less expensive in general. Fly fishing is a fun way to catch trout, but it takes a little more practice and coordination. In fly fishing, the angler has the additional challenge of casting with an artificial “fly” that looks similar to the insect the trout is feeding on. Many anglers consider artificial fly tying an artform.

Most stores that carry sporting goods will carry fishing tackle and bait. In some towns, even the local hardware stores sell fishing equipment. You can also buy worms in bait shops, and may even find them for sale in pet shops.

There are several types of rods that can be used for spin casting. Spincasting rods have a button at the back that you can push when you want line to go out. Spinning rods have a reel with a bail that can be flipped up or down to release the line. Children may find spin casting rods a little to use.

The size of the hook decreases as the size number increases. Start with a size 8-10 single plain shank or barbless hook. Barbed hooks are not recommended–they are harder to remove from the fish if you have to throw it back, and the fish is more likely to die. Bring a few hooks when you fish–you may lose a hook if it gets caught on a stick, or if a fish swallows it.

It’s best to start with a 6 lb monofilament line, but there are other types of line that you can try after you are comfortable fishing. You need to tie the hook on the line well to make sure it stays on. There are several easy knots to use to tie the hook onto the line
