Joining societies (particularly sports teams - even if you’re not sporty) is the best way to make friends!
I have 2 pieces of advice for freshers starting uni. Firstly, really make the most of your time at uni, because for some of you, it’ll only be the 3 years. You won’t get an opportunity like this again to meet people so similar to you or join a society so easily with people your age. Put yourself out there, you’ll regret it otherwise! Having said that, my second piece of advice is: don’t feel like you have to be best friends with everyone you meet, or that you have to please a crowd. Don’t let people lead you into uncomfortable situations, and keep the people you really trust close. Be able to stand up for yourself and recognize if someone isn’t being a very good friend. Uni is all about learning big life lessons like these, but it genuinely is one of the best experiences you’ll ever have.
Your life is more than your course. Find something you love to do which is not related to your degree. This way you’ll mix with all different people and have wide ranging and varied conversation. As a medic, it’s hard to get away from other medics but volunteering with KCL Marrow I have met Pharmacy, English Literature, Computer Science students, and that’s not counting the people I meet to sign up to the register! Just try something new 😁
Go to welcome events held by different societies to mingle with other freshers and talk to second and third years as well. Many of my friends are in different year groups and it really helps, especially in a course like Medicine as you find out what to expect from later years 🤗
Hi everyone!
I'm Deniz, I'm a third year student studying Chemistry with Biomedicine. I'm the Participation & Equality Officer at KCL Turkic Society, and the Events Manager for the International Students Network.
I transferred to King's for my second year, not knowing anyone, so my biggest advice to you guys is don't be afraid to just talk to people - even online. Everyone is a bit nervous, so it may be awkward at first, but put yourself out there and I'm certain you will make some great friends. That's how I made some amazing friends last year, who have helped me through so much when I was so confused and new to everything.
This years freshers will have a bit of a difference experience. But - join societies, go to fun events, and make the most out of your time at university! Feel free to reach out for any questions or concerns, we've all been there, and I'd be more than happy to help. I hope you all have a great year at King's!
