Virtual Field Trips

When I thought of this idea I channeled my inner Ms. Frizzle and collected some fun places that we may want to enjoy together! Check back in periodically to see when I've added new field trips to the list. Some are through google maps, others are through particular institutions.

*Please be sure to monitor your child while they are using the web. *

The White House

The White House is where the President of the United States lives!

First, watch this video about the white house led by former President Obama. Then, look around the first floor of the White House on your own.

After, you can walk around the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, where most of the people who work for the President go to work. You could work there too someday if you want to help or be in charge of running the country!

Journey to the Deep Sea

Let’s take a dive deep into the sea! So many of you have been interested in the ocean lately. As Daz was teaching us, the ocean has seven different layers. Humans have only explored 5% of the earth’s oceans. That means MOST of the ocean (95%) is still left to explore! Maybe YOU will be one of those explorers someday...

Watch this video of the deepest dive in Antarctica. Then, watch this video to meet some of the strangest creatures of the deep sea!

African Safari

Let's go on an African Safari! (Long version)

These kids got to go on a real safari. They are excited about it and they remind me of you! (Short Version)

Safari comes from a Swahili word that means "journey." A safari is a journey to see animals in their natural habitat.

Then, learn about lions with this silly yet informative video!

Learn from these two kids as they go to Egypt and learn about the pyramids!

Listen for words like archaeologist, excavate, and hieroglyph.

Then, explore the outside of the pyramids on your own with GoogleMaps street view!

Go for a nice, relaxing walk through the forest and learn about wildlife and plants along the way! (Sound on)

Listen for the words "flora" and" fauna." Flora means plant life and fauna means animal life!

Take a tour of this famous museum! Be sure to visit the 2nd floor!

Volcanos

Have you ever wondered about volcanoes? Watch this short video to understand more about how a volcano is formed.

Then, tour Hawaii's Volcanic National Park on your own. You'll see volcanic cliffs, lava tubes (which are like caves!) and more!

To learn more about volcanoes, listen to this nonfiction read aloud from National Geographic.

Previous Adventures

The New England Aquarium

Let's all visit the aquarium together for a live presentation! It begins at 11, but if you cannot watch at 11 you can watch later on. Previous visits are also on this website, including a feeding of Myrtle the Turtle.

There are also links to the rescue and rehabilitation of Munchkin, a large sea turtle. They released her back into the ocean with a tracking device so we still know where she is! Here is an update on her.

The International Space Station

First, listen to a story about Mae Jemison a real life NASA astronaut who became the first black woman to travel to space on the space shuttle Endeavour. Then, watch kids ask Mae questions!

After, explore the inside of the International Space Station with Google Maps and pretend you're an Astronaut just like Mae!

If you want to watch astronauts give a tour of the ISS (International Space Station) click here. (Gets really good at about 4:30).

For more information about Mae, click here!

Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu means "Old Mountain" in the Quechua language.

First, watch this video to learn more about this city of ruins high up in the mountains of Peru.

Then, explore for yourself with Google Maps! You can walk through the ruins and see if you can find the rock slide!

To learn more about Peru, watch here (PS I have a new puzzle of these animals - I love them so much.

Look, the picture above. It is Ms. Fine at Machu Picchu in real life!!!!! Think of a question you might like to ask her and we will interview her at our next class meeting.

The State Hall at the Austrian National Library

This library reminds me of the one in Beauty and the Beast! It is my favorite in the whole world.

It was built over 300 years ago, has over two hundred thousand books, and some of those books are more than 500 years old!

Click through to see a map and an architect's sketch of this library. Then, explore on your own! Don't forget to look up to see the paintings on the ceiling, also called Frescoes (fres-koes). I like to find all the hidden staircases.

This library has lots of special books that have been put online for us to see. You can see Mozart's real handwriting on the music he wrote in 1756. Isn't the cover beautiful?! This is an original Fairy Tale by Hans Christian Andersen. It is written in German. Mr. Dan thinks it translates to "The Princess and the Pig Herder." Look at the beautiful illustrations. Maybe you could write a story with illustrations like that this week!

I hope you enjoy this place as much as I did!

Caving with Kids!

Let's go CAVING with this adventurous family! Be sure to listen to find out what "Cave Crickets" eat if they get too hungry. Yikes!

Then, explore the Son Doong cave on your own!

To find out more about caves, explore the Big Universe Library. There are some really great "just right" books where you can learn about sound in caves, bats, how caves are formed, and more!

Mars

Have you ever wondered what it is like on Mars? No people or animals from Earth have ever been there, but scientists have sent a rover, or a vehicle used for exploring, named Curiosity.

First, watch NASA astronauts read one of these Fiction books from the international space station!

Max Goes to Mars (Story about a dog astronaut) Read by Astronaut Mike Hopkins.

OR

Moustronaut Goes to Mars (Story about a mouse astronaut) Read by Astronaut Scott Kelly, who is the author's brother!

Then, explore Mars yourself with photos taken from the Curiosity Rover. Make sure you watch the introduction!

P.S. Remember this song?!
