First Coast Speech & Debate exists to help students think clearly, speak courageously, and live faithfully under the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
We are a Christ-centered, parent-led club committed to excellence in speech, debate, preparation, leadership, and character. Our goal is not merely to win trophies, but to develop young men and women who can communicate truth with wisdom, conviction, humility, and strength.
We believe speech and debate prepares students for far more than competition. Students learn how to think critically, communicate persuasively, handle pressure, engage opposing ideas, and stand confidently in difficult environments without compromising integrity.
At First Coast, we pursue competitive excellence while striving to honor Christ in the way we speak, prepare, lead, and live.
We are not simply building competitors. We are building families, friendships, leaders, and a community that seeks to honor Christ together while pursuing excellence.
Why First Coast?
First Coast is highly competitive, deeply collaborative, and intensely community-driven.
We care about preparation, discipline, integrity, adaptability, and growth. Our students work hard, sharpen one another constantly, and learn how to perform confidently under pressure. We challenge students to think independently rather than rely on scripted responses or memorized formulas.
At the same time, our club culture is full of camaraderie, humor, friendship, and belonging. Students build deep relationships through preparation, travel, difficult rounds, victories, disappointments, and years of growing together. Many students who previously felt overlooked or out of place quickly find genuine friendship and purpose within the First Coast community.
We are serious about competition. We are serious about preparation. But we are equally serious about building Christian community and helping students mature into thoughtful, articulate, grounded young men and women.
Parents are also a vital part of the club. First Coast is intentionally parent-led, and we believe strong families and strong community are essential to long-term growth and success.
Our goal is not simply to create successful competitors. We want to help students become confident communicators, resilient leaders, faithful Christians, and lifelong friends.
Competitive Philosophy
At First Coast, we compete hard.
Winning is fun. Excellence matters. Preparation matters.
But we also believe long-term growth matters more than protecting rankings or avoiding failure.
Every student receives the same foundational training, preparation systems, and competitive expectations. There is no hidden “advanced group” reserved for select students. Students who excel are typically the ones who apply those principles consistently with discipline, coachability, creativity, and effort.
We encourage students to take ownership of their cases, strategies, preparation, and competitive decisions. Coaches provide guidance and structure, but students are also given freedom to experiment, test ideas, adapt, and develop their own style.
Our practices emphasize live application:
difficult rounds,
partner rotations,
pressure situations,
strategy discussions,
real clash,
adaptability under stress.
We do not want students who can only deliver scripted speeches. We want students who can think clearly, adapt quickly, and engage confidently in any round or real-world situation.
