We've noticed that there is a serious need within the local area for the firefighters in terms of nutrition and exercise. The Firefighter Fit Program (F3), established in late 2022, allows IUP students and faculty to work together, one-on-one with the local firefighters, to assess their current health status and develop a nutritional and/or fitness plan to increase their fitness levels and quality of life. This will ultimately increasing their ability to respond to local emergency calls more effectively and efficiently while maintaining optimal health.
The fitness level of firefighters may truly be a matter of life and death and their health and wellbeing should be of paramount to the whole community. Through an interdisciplinary university-community partnership, IUP Exercise Science and Nutrition students gain real-world experience to make a positive impact on this issue head on by providing fitness testing, dietary assessment, and related for the Indiana Fire Association (IFA) members. In addition to nutrition education and guidance, each firefighter will have an opportunity to participate in either a corrective exercise program, and independent exercise program, or a group exercise program.
Although we are just getting started and this is a developing program, we are confident and excited that we're making strides toward a successful program for the local IFA. The first assessments for the firefighters were completed on February 28, 2023 and programming in under way. Please get them filled out and sent in as soon as possible so we can continue to develop the program and optimize the health of our local team of firefighters.
"No one is coming, it's up to us."
