Fire-resilient buildings in the WUI (CNRS). It will focus on the provision of a safer place for the population and to allow firefighting services to focus more effectively on extinguishing extreme wildfires (IA 2.3). It will encompass the definition of safety distances between the constructions and the ornamental vegetation located around them as well as the recommendation of building construction materials. Special attention will be paid to the openings as they can induce smoke entry into the buildings or the building ignition.
Creating barriers to the spread of fires in the WUI (ISCI). It will focus on the development of innovative fuel management approaches, integrating ignition models, a novel stochastic fire spread simulator, adjustments based on machine learning methods, and optimization methods, for application in the WUI (IA 2.3). The emphasis will be on the design of the rural component of the WUI by creating barriers to the spread of fires to better protect houses and properties from being reached by any large forest fire under uncertain conditions while considering the provision of merchantable items like timber.
