While teaching and academic exchange formed the heart of my SEA-Teacher experience, my days off gave me the opportunity to slow down, explore, and simply enjoy life in Manila. These moments allowed me to recharge, discover new places, and create unforgettable memories with fellow SEA-Teacher participants, student buddies, and friends who made every adventure even more meaningful.
One of my favorite weekend destinations was Manila Ocean Park, the first world-class marine-themed park in the Philippines. Walking through its famous Oceanarium tunnel while watching sharks, stingrays, colorful tropical fish, and other marine species swim above us was an unforgettable experience.
Beyond being entertaining, the visit also reminded me of the importance of marine conservation and environmental education. The interactive exhibits demonstrated how public learning spaces can make science enjoyable and accessible for people of all ages. As a future educator, I found this experience inspiring because it showed how learning can happen naturally outside traditional classroom settings.
Another memorable destination was the National Museum of the Philippines, where I explored galleries featuring Filipino history, archaeology, anthropology, and fine arts. Seeing historical artifacts, indigenous cultural collections, and famous artworks helped me gain a deeper appreciation for the country's rich heritage and national identity.
One of the highlights was witnessing how museums preserve stories from the past while making them meaningful for future generations. It reminded me that education extends beyond textbooks and classrooms—it can also be experienced through art, history, and cultural preservation.
As someone who enjoys running and staying active, joining Car-Free Sunday in Makati City became one of the most enjoyable parts of my stay. Every Sunday morning, selected roads in the city's business district are temporarily closed to vehicles, allowing people to walk, run, cycle, and exercise together in a safe and welcoming environment.
Seeing families, children, athletes, and local residents enjoying public spaces together reflected the community's strong commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles and well-being. Participating in this activity made me feel connected to the local community while allowing me to experience Manila from a completely different perspective.
Another place that quickly became one of my favorite hangout spots was Cubao. Known for its lively shopping centers, restaurants, cafés, and entertainment venues, Cubao offered a glimpse into the everyday lifestyle of young people in Manila.
Whether exploring local shops, trying new food, or simply walking around with friends after classes, every visit became an opportunity to relax and enjoy simple moments together. These ordinary experiences often became some of the most meaningful memories because they allowed us to spend quality time outside our academic responsibilities.
Before concluding my journey in the Philippines, I visited SM Mall of Asia (MOA), one of the largest shopping malls in Southeast Asia. Beyond shopping for souvenirs and spending time with friends, the visit became a wonderful opportunity to reflect on everything I had experienced throughout the programme.
Walking around the mall, enjoying the vibrant atmosphere, and watching the sunset by Manila Bay made me realize how quickly time had passed. What had once felt like a completely unfamiliar city had gradually become a place filled with memories, friendships, and experiences that I would always treasure.
Looking back, these off-duty adventures were much more than sightseeing activities. They became moments of rest, laughter, discovery, and reflection that balanced my academic responsibilities throughout the programme. Together, they reminded me that every journey is shaped not only by where we study or teach, but also by the places we explore, the moments we share, and the memories we create along the way.
