I hope you enjoyed your trip through Texas and hearing a story about my personal life with inspiration from a Tejas tale. I now welcome you to China. I hope you enjoy this little remake of a Chinese fairy tale.
Once upon a time, there were two sisters. The two sisters loved playing with each other, despise their five-year gap. The older sister was always responsible for looking after the younger sister. Although she found her to be annoying, she knew she had to do it. The two sisters played games together, dressed up, imaginary play, and everything in between. Since the younger sister was five years from the older one, she had a special lamb that she always carried around. She loved this lamb and took it everywhere. The younger sister's lamb was named "Lamby" (I know, very original right?).
One day while the sisters were playing, the younger one fell asleep. The older one thought it would be funny to hide Lamby while the younger sister slept.
When the younger sister awoke, she immediately looked for her stuffed lamb, but it was nowhere to be found. She immediately panicked and started searching everywhere for it. She began asking everyone in her family if they had seen Lamby and if so, where was he. Everyone responded that they had not seen him since the younger sister went to sleep.
The younger sister was so upset. She began to sob because she couldn't find him.
She asked her older sister, "Why can't I find Lamby? I know I had him when I went to sleep."
The older sister responded, "I haven't seen him, but we can search one more time."
Together they set out to find this special lamb. They looked all over the house, upstairs and downstairs. They were about to give up. But then, the older sister suggested they look outside. The younger sister knew he wasn't outside, but she trusted her sister's suggestion.
They walked out the back door, and there was Lamby. He was sitting on the pool rocks right above the pool just staring right at the younger sister. Together they rushed to the lamb! The older sister had to climb on the rocks in order to reach him. Since the older sister knew her younger sister loved the lamb so much, she carefully climbed on the rocks and retrieved the lamb.
The younger sister was overjoyed. She hugged her special animal and gave him lots of kisses. She thanked her sister for retrieving her stuffed animal and gave her a great big hug.
The younger sister was unaware that the older one was responsible for her missing lamb. Although she had suspicions that it was her who did it, she never blamed her. She always praised and thanked her for bringing Lamby back to her. The younger sister was just glad to have him back in her arms.
As the two sisters grew older, the older one was always finding ways to pick on the younger one. Stuffed animals always seemed to be missing and would randomly reappear in the oddest places. This allowed for the two sisters to go on an "adventure" to try and find the missing items. Together they bonded, even though the older one was responsible for everything.
Author's Note:
Why the Dog and Cat are Enemies
The Chinese Fairy Book, ed. by R. Wilhelm and translated by Frederick H. Martens (1921)
In the Chinese fairy tale, the story about the dog and cat starts out with the two creatures' owners having a ring of gold. With this ring of gold, the family had everything they needed in order to live, but the owners sold the piece. By doing so, the family began to grow poor and hungry. Together the dog and cat figured they needed the ring. So, they set out together in search of it. The cat got help from a little mouse to retrieve the ring. The two animals took the journey back home. The cat could climb better and made it back home quicker than the dog. The cat was praised and rewarded while the dog was scolded for being slow and of no help. I decided to change up the original Chinese fairy tale by adding a story about my sister and me growing up. My older sister always took my stuffed animals and would hide them around my house growing up, much like the cat and the dog missing their golden ring. Together, they worked to retrieve the ring, much like my sister and I searching for my stuffed animals. The difference is that my sister always did it on purpose (without me knowing as a small kid) and then I would praise her for finding the missing animals, much like the cat receiving praise for bringing back the ring.
