As discussed in Chapter 2 in the book An Engineer's Attempt to Explain Personal Finance, the total amount of expense over one's life cannot exceed the income. While the shape in Figure 1 is a very simplified representation of income and expense, it helps visualize the concept. Below is a dynamic version of Figure 1 to help visualize the impacts of making long-term changes.
